Question about Dell Dimension 4600 PC Desktop

1 Answer

I have a dell dimension 4600 which is having intermitent problems connecting to the internet via a hardwire connection to a verizon fios wireless router. The router works fine with my dell laptop both when wired and wireless. Updated network driver on the dimension 4600, checked cables, reset TCP/IP and DHCP settings, even rolled back system restore to before problem existed - I am at a loss for what to try next. Any ideas other than getting a new computer or reverting back to my cablevision IP service and modem?

    Dear DrifterK,

Thank you for your response. I have not adapted the dimension 4600 for the wireless connection as I have it hardwired into the modem - is there something I need to do that I haven't? It was working fine most of the time without me reconfiguring my desktop.

    Thanks again for your help

FIOS replaced the router and all is working fine now.

I assumed you adapted the pc with a device for wireless connection ..if all the other are OK ..the problem is this device ......try it on other computer ..if it works ..its just a compatibility issue ..if not its a problem with it ...
also try to change the freqvency they work in ..if it possible ....or change the position ..cause they work on a radio wave and you might interfere with something when it goes out of signal ...

I would start by downloading all available drivers from Toshiba, just in case some have been updated. If you hard wire the laptop and from the Toshiba web site, follow the prompts to find all drivers for your exact model.

Adding Dell Dimension 4600 to existing wireless network?...

Go to Staples and purchase a Linksys USB wireless-G (only G needed - the new "N" protocol is overkill) adapter (~$60.00). Insert the Linksys CD and follow the instructions. When prompted, plug the USB adapter into the Dell (frt or back) doesn't matter. If his "roomies" have security enabled on their router, you'll need to know the level, password/passphrase, and the network name that they assigned.
Good luck.

I have Verizon Fios install in my home. I use to have Comcast. This is the situation, before the Fios my linksys wireless router was connected directly to a modem. Now my linksys wireless router is...

Your IP address for you linksys router needs to be changed.  More than likely there using the same IP address such as 192.168.0.1.
You have to convert your linksys router to a switch and change the IP address range it uses to on that doesn't conflict with the Verizon router.
10.150.1.1 should work.

The battle: Acer Vs. Verizon FiOS

Verizon needs to apply a firmware update for the Atheros wireless adapter in your notebook. I work for Acer and I end up having to tell people this all day long. If you take this to a wireless router that is not from verizon you will have no problems with your connection. Maybe if enough Fios customers complain they will provide a firmware update for this.

Driver problems

JPWatson, This link will take you to the drivers for your Dimension 4600 with Windows XP: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/devices.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&SystemID=DIM_P4_4600&os=WW1&osl=EN As far as the PC showing you already have a connection I would ignore that for now. Just download the appropriate drivers from this Dell page including the network interface card drivers and install them first. After you have rebooted and verified that the hardware devices are working correctly then start troubleshooting your Internet connection if it is still necessary. Let us know if you have any other questions and please don?t forget to rate this post.
