If it cuts off the water ok and motor running
it could be a coupling .
possible transmission.
if no motor noise
could be motor .
wiring,
timer.

What can the problem be when the agitator and tub do not spin or agitate? the washer fills with water, but agitator will not agitate and tub will not move. there is just a humming noise

Well, this is one of those times when it is important to note what brand of washer you have.
The fact that you hear something humming tells me that the motor is turning and that tells me the lid switch is activated and functioning correctly

If it is a whirlpool brand made machine the drive coupler between the motor and the transmission is probably stripped out or broken and needs to be replaced.
Keep in mind that Whirlpool also manufactures : Estate, Roper, Kitchen Aid, some Kirkland and some Kenmore washers. All have the same coupler that gets stressed and breaks. A cause for this is often times is overloading the machine.
Most other brands use a belt drive system and the belt probably burnt in two or broke. Again the cause in most cases is overloading.
After inspecting and finding the problem, make sure you have the model number and call your local appliance parts store or repair center and they probably have your part in stock.

Your lid switch is bad. If you give model number I can give you the part number you need.

Estate washer won't spin

If it still agitates and fills, this is most likely due to a faulty lid switch.
