Question about Washing Machines

Maytag Insignia sounds like a machine gun and then turns off.

My maytag Insignia (about 5 years old) sounds like a machine gun, sort of like metal hitting metal, when it spins. Then, it cuts off. I can let it sit for a while and then start it up again, but it does not work like it should anymore. I have a repair man coming out tomorrow to look at it, please help asap! Thanks!!!!

Re: Maytag Insignia sounds like a machine gun and then...

Sounds very much like the "spider" bracket which supports the drum on the centre shaft has broken. The "spider" is usually 3 alloy arms branching out from just forward of the bearing. It can still support the drum a little with one arm broken and even with two broken but when all three give way the drum is virtually independent of the shaft and bangs around a lot. If you can feel any looseness of the drum (particularly back and forward) it confirms "spider" arm damage. Very expensive to repair - labour intensive and replacement parts not cheap. This is usually a "terminal" problem. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Sounds like it could be a bad bearing or brake package. depending on how much the charge is to repair/replace the part i woild weigh it against purchase of a new machine. either job is labor intensive

I have a Maytag Atlantis top load machine. It is 7 years old. I have very dark oil dripping from under the machine at the bottom edge of the front. I am assuming the gear box is gone but wanted to confirm...

Sorry to confirm your suspisions but its leaking oil from the transmission and its exxxpensive to replace the transmission. And sad but true the good ole days of dependabilty of the maytag is gone espically since 5 years ago Maytag was bought by Whirlpool. a Whirlpool is a good machine but nothing was good as the old Maytag's

Maytag washing machine

Hiya .. would suggest you having a look at the balance around the drum, ( normally heavy concrete blocks)... locate the fixing bolts and tighten them up ....should sort your prob.
Also make sure that the washer is fairly even and tight on its legs.. this is what usually causes the problem in the first place..

Maytag Neptune MAH6500

Sounds like some sort of broken support or spirng underneath. Flip it over and look. Expect a little water to run out though.
