As long as the Esternal is formatted correctly it should work fine, it might be that you computer wont read the hard-drive, not the files.

If you want to exchange data files between a PC and a MAC then your My Book 3.0 external hard drive needs to be formatted in FAT32. Use a PC to format the external USB hard drive in FAT32.
If you only want to use the external hard drive on the MAC then use the MAC to format the hard drive in HFS+

MAC computers use a different filesystem to arange data on your hard drive, if you are switching back and forth between Windows and MAC platforms, you will need to reformat the drive to the FAT32 filesystem.

To do this, from your Windows system, connect your drive, right click on the drive and select Format, select FAT32 from the Filesystem drop down menu. Once the format is complete you should be able to use the drive on either system.

Use my drive on Mac..

Both OSs have different Security Architectures. NTFS for Windows and HFS+ for MAC. So if you modify these permissions (you could) your MAC OS might not be able to access it properly. But MAC will read NTFS permission (But not write onto the disk).

If your external HDD was used on a windows machine, it was probably formatted in the NTFS file format. Mac uses Fat32. The entire HDD has to be formatted to Fat32 for the Mac system to use.

Installing 1tb External Hardrive from Freeagent onto Macbook Pro

I would be tempted to format the drive using the disk utility whch can be found under applications and then utilities once opened choose your drive in the left hand window and on the right hand side click on erase. If you are using the Seagate drive for the Mac only, format it as a Mac OS Extended (journaled) Choose your volume format and name and then erase. Hope this helps.

Formatting my Freeagent 1tb external hard drive for my Mac?

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.

an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml

download and install the software then restart your mac.

Maxtor 300GB--can't delete or write

You didn't specify if the original PC was Windows or MAC.

Is this USB external used on a PC with Windows? If so is it formatted NTFS? If so, Mac OSX and pretty much everything else but windows NT, 2k and XP can not write to NTFS. OSX and Linux will read an NTFS partition but at this time not write to it. If your drive is formatted NTFS, I would say, go to a windows machine and convert it to a FAT 32 Partition. Most everything will both read and write to FAT32.
