SOURCE: sound is working but internal speaker is not working

Connecting headphones to the system will disabled the internal speakers until the headphone jack is disconnected, at which such time the internal speakers should function again.

If you disconnect the headphones and the internal speakers are not re-activated, then there may be damaged to the microswitch in the jack. (Try rebooting after the headphones are disconnected too)

SOURCE: headphone jack does not work, audio still plays from speakers

sound like the hardware supporting your headphones may have disconnected from its solder. This could have happened from dropping the notebook with the headphones plugged in and landing badly, or a strong or constant tug on the input. Otherwise, it could be a software configuration like you've tried

Internal speakers do not works

Unplug Headphones. Open Control Panel, Sounds, select Speakers. Perhaps Headphones are set as default. The Dell Audio drivers can be found here: http://www.dell.com/support/drivers/us/en/04/Product/vostro-1400 Do ALL your Windows and Dell updates, if you haven't already, after a install.

Dell laptop headphone sound on out headphone no sound

Sound Loss in Dell Computer Headphones b> Most Dell computers have special hardware and software that are set up to automatically adjust the configuration of the headphone ports when headphones are connected, muting the primary speakers in the process. If no sound is coming out of your headphones, this is most likely caused by a configuration issue that can be resolved with a few simple steps.

Basic Headphone Troubleshooting
If no sound is coming from your headphones, confirm that the headphones work properly by using them with a different device. After this, confirm that the headphones are plugged into the proper jack. If your CD/DVD drive has a headphone jack in front, audio will only be played through this jack when you are playing a disc. On a desktop computer, the correct jack to use for headphones is usually color-coded green, while notebook computers will have headphone icons next to the correct jacks. Finally, check the speaker icon in the system tray to make sure that your sound output is not muted. b> Troubleshooting Notebooks b> Most Dell notebooks use a special type of audio jack. The jack, along with the sound drivers that are installed, automatically detect whether headphones or speakers are plugged in and adjust the sound output accordingly. If this does not happen when headphones are plugged in, the sound drivers may be at fault. Visit the Dell support website and download the most recent sound drivers for your notebook. If this does not help, some users have reported success with removing the sound drivers completely and letting Windows install generic drivers automatically. Last Resort b> If all other options have been exhausted, the last resort in troubleshooting a headphone jack is running a complete system recovery operation. This will completely erase all of the information on your primary hard drive partition and reinstall Windows along with the drivers for all of your hardware. This is an extreme measure, as you will lose all of the information that you have stored on the hard drive. However, it will resolve the issue if it is caused by a software problem. If the issue remains, the headphone jack must be replaced. Hope this helps.

HI I HAVE A DELL VOSTRO A860 AND I JUST INSTALLED WINDOWS 7 EVERYTHING IS WORKING FINE EXCEPT THE SOUND IVE DOWNLOADED VISTA DRIVERS REALTEK AND CONEXTEANT DRIVERS BUT I CANT SEEM TO GET THE SOUND TO WORK...

If you hear the sound on the headphones then the drivers installed correctly and the defect is either hardware - the jack for the headphones is stuck so the internal speakers are no longer activated when you unplug the headphones = the jack will have to be replaced by a shop - or software - you will have to go into the Realtek HD Control Panel and configure the audio outputs correctly = enable or unmute the internal speakers.
The Panel icon can be found in the notification area or in Start > Control Panel.

Does the Dell Vostro 220 have built in speakers and if so how do I activate them?

No the desktop doesn't have internal speakers. Connect external speakers to the Line Out (green audio jack) for basic computer headphones and speakers with an integrated amplifier. See the manual for directions on setting up surround sound systems. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/vos220/en/index.htm Make sure the speakers are on and have power, if needed.

I hope this helps.

Can't get headphone jack on front of computer to work

The headphone jack up front may not be connected to the PC's integrated audio on the motherboard (or to the PC's sound card if you purchased one with the system instead. There'll be an audio cable running from the front of the computer to a port on the motherboard. If you look at this motherboard diagram for the Vostro 220 (not the 420 or 220s), it'll be the port numbered "15" that's the opne for the audio for the front panel. You don't need the speakers plugged on the back to have the headphones work, but having them plugged in will at least tell you if the sound is working or not.
