You may either have a faulty air filter, spark-plug, debris in the carb., or broken gasket (between carb. and motor). Most likely it is clogged ports inside the carb. Do make sure the fuel is entering the bowl freely.

I don't know what kind of mower or engine you have, but the symtoms are indicate a carburetor that need to be cleaned/repaired. As for the throttle, it should be at at full anytime you're using it. Running less than full speed can overheat and overwork the engine.

Why does the mower have to be full throttle to start it, to make it move at all, and to stay running at all?

this could be a few things as to cause :

1- throttle cables stretch as they get older , if marking on throttle says "run" it might really be choke on carb - looking down carb body(air clean off) with engine off move throttle to choke the choke butterfly should shut off (choke does have small hole in it) the butterfly should not be just barely moving or half way it needs to be closed all the way
2- modern fuels leave deposits inside of carbs if machine is left to set for long times (weeks) these deposits don't just get washed away when the engine is started again either , they must be chemically or mechanically flushed away by either a carb cleaner (chemical) or taking carb apart and cleaning it totally out (inside and out) -these deposits cause poor carb performance and even non working engines
a method to keep from having to do this often , is to install a fuel shut off valve in the fuel tank ( might already have one there you just gotta look for it) and when your done with machine shut off the gas valve and allow it to run out of gas dry !

How do you start a 19th mtd riding mower

Put your left foot on the clutch pedal and push down all the way on the clutch. Move the throttle lever all the way to the top, this turns on the choke. Turn the key clockwise, to the right, to start the engine. Once the engine has started, move the throttle lever down to turn off the choke. You only need the choke when the engine is cold. If you use the choke while the engine is hot, you can flood the engine (too much gas) and this will fowl the spark plug. If you have flooded the engine, turn off the choke by lowering the throttle lever and try to start the engine a few times. If the engine doesn't start, then you may need to wait 20 to 30 minutes before trying to start the engine again. If the engine still does not start, then you can remove the spark plug to dry and to clean the spark plug. With the spark plug out, turn the key to the start position for 10 seconds, to push out excess fuel and fumes. Replace the spark plug and try starting the engine without turning on the choke.

I need help with my B/S Engine. Lack of power and black smoke coming from the exhaust.

If the plugs are ok and your engine is not smoking after starting and running ..Sounds like either of three things..all with the carburetor .First the carb has a adjustment screw for air/gas mixture on the side if the carb where it attaches to the engine..try this start the engine and at about half throttle..now adjust the screw clockwise until the engine starts to miss and bogg down then back the other way until it starts missing and bogging again. Then slowly adjust back and forth until you hear the engine run the smoothest..give it more throttle if it starts to run rough do the same procedure until you get the results you want..if it is the mixture problem this will take care of it..if this doesn't it it may be your fuel jet in the bowl dirty or the blow float sticking..if you are not familiar with carbs best to have a professional look at it..you can drop the bowl by removing the bottom bowl and clean it out...check to see if the float easly moves up and down..replace the bowl and go from there..worse scenario new or rebuilt carb...good luck..

have you left the choke open ? this mixes more fuel to the engine upon starting but will stall it if left open too long . check your fuel filter too it may be full of debris.

How to start the generator

Hi Joe, I had asked for a little clarification and have not received any information. I will answer this question based on the generator is in good working order and it is a recoil start. Open the petcock, (this is the fuel valve) and give it about a minute to fill the fuel bowl on the carburetor. If your generator has an engine an on/off kill switch, set to on. If the generator has an auto idle switch set it to off. If the engine has a throttle lever located under the carburetor, push it all the way down (full throttle). Pull the choke knob out completely, there is a detent on the choke for half choke, pull it past this for full choke. pull the recoil starter rapidly. As soon as the engine starts running push the choke knob to half choke, this will allow the engine to run smooth while it's warming up. Depending on the climate that you are in, warm up time will vary. After a minute or two in cold climates start pushing the choke knob in, if it starts to run poorly pull it back out too the half position and let it warm up some more. When you can posh the choke in without the engine faltering it is ready to go. In warmer climates you might be able to start the engine without the choke or in the halfway position. Robin Subaru makes some of the finest small engines available. I would choose a Robin over a Honda every time. I hope this gets your generator going, and once again this is based on the generator being in good working order. Good luck, Michael Burke.

2nd use of chainsaw pp3516avx, it won't start, choke lever will not stay extended. I followed the instructions to start and nothing works

The choke system is connected to the half throttle position, if you lift the throttle trigger the choke pull will automatically return, whilst trying to start do not lift the throttle trigger, the starting procedure is, pump the primer bulb as many times as it takes to 3/4 fill the bulb, pull the choke pull fully out, this will switch the saw on and engage the half throttle, crank the engine until it fires once, do not continue to pull,it will actually not run on full choke, if you do continue to crank with the choke fully out, you will very quickly flood the engine, now push the choke fully in, now crank the engine until it fires up, lift the throttle trigger once, this will dissengage the half throttle, and it should now come down to idle.

Hi Experts, I have a McCullough lawn edger/trimmer Mac-Pro I. I am having problems staring the engine. I can't remember whether I have to hold the throttle in whilst pulling the cord? Also,...

Yes, the throttle should be in the full in position. When starting, the choke should also be in the full on position.
If you can't tell if it is in the closed or open position, remove the cover that is over the carb where the air filter is and you should be able to see which way you move the lever for the closed or open position and mark it where you can see it. When starting put the throttle full on and the choke also in the full on position. It should usually start and stop right away. Now move the choke to the full off position keep the throttle in the full on position and it should start in 2 or 3 pulls. If it doesn't do the procedure again. While you have the cover off the carb check the air filter and if it is very dirty replace it or clean it off because a really dirty air filter could make it run rough or not start at all. I will gladly answer any questions. Best regards and good luck.

the idle air control valve may be bad or just needs cleaned out. idle air control valve acts the same as a choke. if it is messing up it will cause engine not to run right.
