You want to remove the top cover? there are four screws on top, and four catches, two in front and two in back. if i remember correctly, you also need to open the access door in the back.

How do I remove the printer cover? One of the hinges has broken!

Pop the toner door and remove those 2 silver screws. Remove the toner and cassette tray. Gradually from the rear, pull and lift the cover from its corners and slowly lift this upper cover off printer. The 4L is pretty easy, unlike the 4P that you must remove the connection plug on its side cover.

On the laserjet 4L output the top portion of all pages appr, 3 inchs have a medium gray background. no idea why, just started this week, same cartridge, fairly new

That must be your cartdrige or your fuser. Try to open the cover before the paper goes in the fuser (in the back of the printer). Remove the cartrige and the paper jammed in the printer. You must see some writing but not fixed on the paper. If you have a background, that s the cartridge. If not that s the fuser.

I just bought a Compaq Presario computer and need an adapter cable for my HP Laser jet 4L. Where can I find one?

The HP Laserjet 4L uses a standard 25pin parallel printer cable.
These can be purchased at your friendly computer shop or on the Internet.

I amm looking for a driver under windows98 for HP 4l

The driver for the HP 4L printer should be built into Windows 98. Goto add printer, select HP and look for your model. If you cant find the exact model try a laserjet model that is close, it should work fine.
Hope this helps

HP Laser Jet 4L fuses

The fuses are located on the DC Controller (main bottom board). Getting to the DC Controller Board on a 4L printer is a very significant disassembly. Best left for a pro but if you really want to do it, I have attached below a link to a scanned copy of the service manual. Please keep in mind that the scanned copy is not a nice fresh PDF as most manuals as the 4L was made in 1994 and HP has physically scanned the printed manual for distribution. Just look up the removal and replacement of the DC Controller Board. Once removed, the fuses are glass buss style, readily available at any Radio Shack.

Gotta love that old technology.

Hope this helps you. :),%204ML,%204P,%204MP%20Service%20Manual.pdf

Laserjet 4L

What you actually hav is a cracked gear on the main motor. It shows up when you install the cartridge because it requires more torque to drive the cartridge. Remove the top cover, the side formater board. There is 1 screw on the side and 2 on the top that hold in the motor. The motor with the gear attached is available from Dale at Seattle Platen, 1-800-221-2388. Gear only isn't available. Cost is around $25.00.
