Re: laptop driver problem

Contact the manufacturer of the laptop for support. They may or may not have drivers for it- but if they do they should be able to point you in the right direction. Unfortunately most manufacturers that sell vista laptops are not providing any drivers for xp, and have no plans to. Good luck!

I have just bought a new computer and i am trying to install my linksys adapter to my new computer. it worked fine on the old 1, but is not working on the new 1. I am wondering what could be some problems

The WUSB54GSC adapter had been out of production for a while...the last driver update was for Windows XP in 2008 (for Version 2 devices). You should carefully examine the device to see if it is Version 1 or Version 2, as this is necessary when visiting the driver page.

If you're trying to use the adapter on a Windows 7 machine, and Windows 7 does not automatically install the driver, then you're pretty much out of luck as Linksys does not supply a Windows 7 driver for this unit. They don't list a Vista driver, either, although often XP drivers will transfer to Vista without difficulty.

So...if you're trying to install it on a Vista machine, try downloading/installing the XP driver for your device MAY work. If that does not work, or if it's a Win 7 machine, time for a new adapter.

Most new computers these days (at least laptops) have wireless built-in and don't need a USB adapter. I'm assuming, therefore, that you're using this on a desktop. If so, and you need a new one, very good quality ones can be had at WalMart for around $20. Just be sure whatever you buy is compatible to your operating system. It will be printed on the packaging.

Hope that's helpful.

How to fix the wireless controler in a think pad

When you download the T40 device drivers from the IBM/Lenevo WEB site make sure you select your model laptop and, they need to be the XP or Vista versions of the drivers you need.
When you run the driver programs they will be unzipped/expanded to the hard drive in a folder c:\drivers. Then you need to open the various folders and run the setup programs to install the various drivers.
NOTE - The T40 series laptops come with various different manufacturers devices (eg. there are a few different wireless model LANs) and if one version driver doesn't work you need to install a different one. It is a bit of trial and error to find the right one

Broadcom wireless 802.11g driver

Unfortunately there are no drivers for XP for your Vista equipment. It was intentionally designed to only work in the vista environment. This is Microsoft's way of strong arming people to migrate to vista against their will! They threaten the hardware manufacturers to pull licensing rights if they release XP drivers for the new equipment. You can buy an external wifi adapter, but then you have to deal with a device hanging out the side of your laptop and using up one of your usb sockets. This is the only way to get around it for the time being. The hackers are slowly writing the drivers, but there are so many different versions of equipment odds are slim that they will ever write one for your exact wifi card. I will place you on my update list and contact you if/when I find the hacked driver for you. I'm keeping a data base of 100's of people going through your exact problem. Complain vigorously to microsoft through email and tell them how you feel about them forcing you to migrate to an operating system nobody wants or needs. If enough people do maybe they will get the picture and allow the hardware manufacturers to release XP drivers. I hope you found this helpful and informative. If you want to be on my update list send me an email to and I will add you to my list, make sure to include your make and model laptop so I do not have to search through here for it,Thanks. As soon as I find a Verified driver that works with your system I will send you a link where you can download it from my personal server. Hope to hear from you soon,

Acer 4315 WLAN driver for WIndows XP

Sorry if I am coming into this early, but I had the same problem with my Acer Extensa 4420. Eventually, after tons of forum threads, I found that the same chip that's in the Acer computers is also in some Dell computers. Just ignore the fact that it says it's by Dell and download this:

Then, extract the files to a folder and from device manager, and point 'Network Controller' (or whatever your wireless adapter is named in device manager) to that folder.
