Question about Toshiba 52WM48 52 in. HDTV-Ready Television

1 Answer

High definition reception

Sky+ was perfect; now we have Sky HD the engineers have been 3 times because there is a repeated intermittent loss of picture. The screen is black for between 2/5 seconds then picture is restored. The sky aerial is directly into the television and another lead is from the television to the video/dvd player. The engineers have replaced the hd box and also the cables.
Sky have told me this is symptomatic of tvs with inbuilt freeview but not Toshiba hd ready.

How do i tune my SAMSUNG PS42S5H for high definition channels

Does this model of TV have a built in HD receiver? I've had a quick look at the instruction manual and it looks more or less the same as mine at home. I've not got HD tv reception built in but have to use a set top box. If you're in UK, it should have Freeview HD sticker from the box or manual somewhere but as this looks like an early model tv (only 1 HDMI socket) then you may need a HD set top box such as Sky HD or Freeview HD

First step...clean out the "old" guy with clean, dry, compressed air to get dust off the capacitors and resistors. The frequencies that the "box" selects are regulated by those components. If this doesn't work you should realize that the electrical values of those components change as they age...and like grandma, can't do the tricks they used to.

It sounds like the TV is having sync issues with your Sky+HD box. HDCP is the "High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection" that is used between components. It requires a sync between the devices to ensure that you are not trying to "steal" the video content you are watching. This intermittent message and blacking of the screen is good evidence that this is your problem.

Even though the HDMI cable worked fine on another set, I'd try a new one anyway. Some TVs and components are more sensitive than others, and a weakened cable may not show a problem on one set, yet show it on another.

Barring the new cable not working, check LG's website for a possible firmware update for your TV, and also try using a different video source, like BluRay and see you have the same problems.

Beyond that, it may just be an issue with the TV itself starting to die.

Your old TV was most likely a SD (Standard Definition) TV. SD signals look better on SD TV sets than they do on HD TV sets. This is normal. If you will, imagine having a tiny wallet photo reprinted as an 8"x10" photo. The image would be grainy and not have the crispness of the original. This is the same principle. Your SD source is being blown up to fill an HD screen. Once you add HD to your programming, the old TV will be forgotten. I hope this was helpful.

Is a Philips SB329986 HD enough for Sky HD?

Cant find specs on your Model. If it is HD 720i or 1080i both will work. But then again the Sky box may convert the HD to composit, which makes ordinary old TV sets look fantastic. On a HD set they look even better. don.t worry it will work.

I suggest that you swap a one of the better boxes with the one that is not so good. If you get the same condition there is nothing wrong with the converters. You probably have a signal loss on the one that is not like the other two, could be a poor connection, wrong type of coax, defective splitter or many other things. Good luck!
