My canon pixma mp830 will print fine, and it used to scan fine too. However, this morning when I press the scan button, put my document in, etc. it just beeps.
When I try going into the MP Navigator software to start the scanning process from within the PC, it gives me an error saying "cannon communicate with scanner, check to see if it is unplugged or turned off"
I don't understand since my computer is communicating fine with the device during printing.
Any thoughts? I'm on win vista business.
I've tried turning the scanner off/on and tried rebooting my PC, but it's not fixed.
I am experiencing the same problem, from the equipment id does not scan

I had the exact same problem after moving my printer to a new computer. I realized you need to have MP Navigator on the computer for the scan to work, just the drivers and firmware aren't enough. The other functions do work without it.
So if you don't have MP Navigator on your computer, that should fix it. If you do, I can't help.

I have tried it with a 5 meter USB cable and it had troubles in communication. However any cable around 1 meter does the job perfectly. So if you are having communication problems in USB:
1. Use a shorter USB cable, 1 meter cable does the job.
2. Make sure your PC and the printer are on the same power line.
3. Make sure your PC is properly grounded.
4. Make sure that USB cable forms a straight line between the printer and your PC (not meandering around the table legs etc).
If none works, I would think that there's a problem with the USB connector (perhaps a broken pin).
If your printer works but the scanner does not;
- It's more likely a software problem rather than a hardware. Perhaps you have downloaded an update from Microsoft or so. Usually a complete removal and the reinstall of the drivers should work. If not perhaps you need to test it on an original Windows installation.
Cheers.

I had a very similar problem. My Pixma MX310 would print fine and even start scanning when used with MP Navigator but then would stop scanning with a communication error. In my case, the problem was fixed by exchanging the cheap USB cable I had used origninally with the USB cable that came with my old scanner. This cable has a ferrite around it close to the end that is connected to the scanner. After changing the cable, everything worked seamlessly; I did not have to change any drivers or things like that.
To me, it looks like my Pixma has a weak USB transmitter that does not leave a lot of margin for a bad transmission channel. This problem shows up especially when it has to transmit many data, which only happens during a scan. In my opinion, Canon would do themselves a big favor with respect to user satisfaction if they either improved their USB transmitter of their device or included a decent USB cable with it that compensates for the weak transmitter.

I Just solved this issue with the fix I found on another site:
Find your twain_32 folder: C:\Windows\twain_32
Find the subfolder for the device that isn't working. I'm using a MP830 and for me that folder is: C:\WINDOWS\twain_32\MP830
Edit your environment variable and add an entry to the System Variable named "PATH". I added:
C:\windows\twain_32\MP830\
Restart any open programs, and VOILA!

I tried everything and the reinstall, unplugging the scanner from the computer and turning it off did not fix the issue. I thought trying another USB was probably a long shot and didn't want to go all the way to the store, buy a cable, only to find it did not work. I have a LaserJet printer right next to the Canon and took a long shot and just switched the USB cables between printers and the Canon MP830 scanner worked just fine, so it obviously must be something to do with the USB cable. Try a newer cable you have at home or buy a newer USB 2 cable as your first solution.

Had the same problem. I tried opening MP Navigator and then just opening it up on the PC then trigger the printer to kick into gear and scan...

mp navigator wont run
I am trying to scan a document onto my MacBook from my MP830. It used to work and now it doesnt
My scanner is making a beeping sound when I try to scan the picture.
I have the same problem except I am able to scan from within the MP Navigator software. I have already downloaded the correct vista drivers (I am running Vista Home Premium) but am still getting a single beep from the printer when I try to scan via the actual machine (push the scan button vs. using the navigator software). What do I do?
Having the same problem: cannot communicate betwen scanner and computer.
Same problem - It's doing my head in. I search for some help on-line, but haven't yet found the solution.
I have the samen problem, try to scan from the machine, but I get just a beep. Online searching didn´t show any results.
Frustrating
When I try going into the MP Navigator software to start the scanning
process from within the PC, it gives me an error saying "cannon
communicate with scanner, check to see if it is unplugged or turned off"
I am having the same problem with my MP830. Upon reading the reply here, I've tried using 3 different USB cables, with no resolution. I have also tried installing the drivers on another PC and it does the exact same thing. I have tried reinstalling the driver several times including the update, but that does not resolve the issue either.
I am having a similar problem. The scanner works fine if you launch the scanning software from the PC. However, it does not launch the scanning software automatically as before when I hit the "scan" button and select "Save to PC". I have downloaded the latest software from the Canon site and reinstalled everything from the scratch but no avail.
It seems to me that the software on the Canon site is not complete.
Does anybody still have the original installation CD?
its the same problem with my pc and scanner. printing is fine, but when i hit scan button, nothing happens... what can i do to fix this?
It will not allow me to scan with the same errors. I bought a new USB cable and it is doing the same thing. Any other suggestions?
It prints, but it won't scan. I haven't used this for quite a while. I don't know what the problem is.
I cannot find anyone who knows how to get my mx882 scanner to grab the paged and scan to my hp laptop either.
Scanner from machine keeps indicating not connected to PC, but connection works for all other applications
