Question about SimpleTech SimpleDrive   STI-USB235/160 160 GB Hard Drive

2 Answers

I'm running Windows ME (still, uggghhh) and I recently bought an external "Rock Mobile" 3.5 USB 2.0 500 GB Hard drive and it is supposed to be compatable. It's on my taskbar to unplug it to save data and is also in my device manager in usb devices and mass storage devices. It comes with its own power supply. My problem is that it is not showing up in 'My Computer'. It is a product from China and is sold all over e-bay but comes with no instructions at all. I've serfed the net to find answers to why it's not on 'My Computer' but most are for XP and Vista. No tech. support phone number on the box either, just an e-mail address for people to download a driver for windows 98 SE. Anyone have a clue to what I need to do to get it to show up in 'My Computer'?

I hve 'Parted Magic' which is a disk partitioning software and it recognizes the drive (Linux)and I partitioned it and formatted it. Is it just a Windows ME problem? My overall goal is to copy anoyher Hard drive that has Windows Vista to this external HDD and transfer it to my original 120 IDE GB HDD. My external is Usb 2.0 with Sata1&2 compatable. I bought it on e-bay and it is 500 GB with its own power supply. My problem is with Windows ME.

this is a common fault with Windows 98 And ME.
It,s to do with these operating systems not recognising mass storage devices.
your only option, is to upgrade to XP. You may get it to work on a windows 2000 upgrade, but not 100% sure.
Even if you had the driver, it still would,nt work.
you could try attaching it, to a computer thats running XP, and make sure the drive is formatted into fat/fat32.

As previously Stated you will not get this Drive To Work With windows Me.

you seem to be going a long way around doing this.

it would be more practical, to just instal vista direct to the hard-drive.

i,d suggest reading some tutorials, regarding installing multiple operating systems, on a hard-drive.

i believe you can have several operating systems on 1 drive, providing they are installed in the correct sequence. or would you be better off installing a second hard-drive to your existing system, and formatting that with xp or vista on, this way you can access the drive with me on it.

Try unplugging all your power supply of your desktop or if you have a laptop, take out the battery and the power plug. Leave it unplugged for about 25 mins, plug the power supply back in and insert your storage device.

if that did not work, try putting it in another usb slot, then try plugging the hard drive into another computer and see if it works.

If the other computer works, theres will problem with your power supply on the orignial computer.

If it doesn't the problem is with your usb hard drive, so read the install/repair manual that came with it.

1 TB Rock Mobile External Harddrive capacity

No. It is not that way. how it is read is as under: 1 K is 1024 bytes 1 MB is 1024 K bytes 1 GB is 1024 MB 1 TB is 1024 GB. As per books. BUT, when it comes to selling HDDs 1 TB is 1000,000,000,000 bytes. the extra 24 bytes at each lelvel have been overlooked. Thats where you loose so much of disk space.
