How do I remove the spindle from the deck of a Craftsman mower.

I can unbolt the spindle from the deck but it won't come through the hole. I tried turning the nut on the top of the pully but the entire shaft turns. suggestions?

Put your blade back on so you will have some backup on the nut. Wedge a piece of 2x4 between the blade and deck to hold the shaft while you take off the nut. You should do that before unbolting the spindle. If you are just replacing bearings, you don't have to unbolt the spindle at all. Just remove the pulley on top and the shaft with blade attached will slide out the bottom. The botton bearing, however, will be on the shaft and is difficult to get off. I use a bearing splitter to get it down far enough to drive off the shaft.

What do I do if the gear that holds the blade is striped out? I cannot get the top bolt off because I have nothing to hold the pulley with. Is there a way to use the two holes on top of the pulley to hold it while I get the top bolt off?

Electric impact wrench works great in these situations
but if you dont have one hold the bottom of the shaft with a pipe wrench and remove the nut with whatever you are trying to remove it with? Big 1/2 inch drive socket with breaker bar?
top nut should never be as tight as it is?
nut comes off counter clockwise

careful not to let the pipe wrench slip while you are trying to get the top nut off.
make sure your wrenches are big enough for leverage issues
you may have to do some filing to the shaft after you are done try not to put the shaft back with burrs from the wrench. could wrap the shaft with duct tape would help some

How do I remove the spindle shaft from the spindle shaft assembly on a Craftsman 917.28907 mower deck blade pulley?

On most you cant. Some are pressed in so on those you need a press to get them out. Usually the spindle assembly is not that much more than just the spindle...and since it's assembled you don't need to worry about bearings and grease either.

Blade loose cannot get spindle off

Sounds like you should remove the deck, flip it upside down and use the blade to hold the spindle while you remove the bolt. if its still too hard to remove, spray it with wd40 or liquid wrench and wait a while and try it again.

Its a 21hp 46'' cut craftsman yts 3000 riding mower

Richard:

Check your blades to see if they are balanced. They should sit level when you put them on an arbor, (something pointy that you can put in the hole in the blade that will not go all the way through the hole. If the blade is heavy on one side you can grind or file the heavy end of the blade (I sharpen the blades and the heavy side gets extra sharpening to remove the excess weight on that side). Also check the spindles that you bolt the blades to when you install the blades. make sure that there is no slop in the spindles... they must not wobble. If they wobble, you didn't keep them greased. You'll have to but new spindles... they're not hard to install.

HEAVY VIBRATION OF MOWER DECK (CRAFTSMAN17.5 HORSE TRACTOR?)

Even new blades can be out of balance, but my guess would be either the other blade spindle, or the tensioner pulley bearing.

First check to make sure you can turn each blade by hand, with the mower off. If neither blade spindle is frozen remove the deck and make sure all the pulleys move freely and function like they should. The cable should have been operating a spring loaded pulley arm that applied tension to the deck belt to make the blades function. Some times build up with block that from moving or rust will make it stick.

There is usually no easy way as the rope goes really tight, The best thing is to use an old bread knife with a wavy edge to cut it off.
The hardest thing is getting to it, if you are up to removing the deck and turning it over, that is the best way.

Removing pulleys from 42 inch Craftsman mower deck

Put the blade back on the star on the shaft and tighten it down. Now you have some backup for the pulley nut. You may have to wedge a 2x4 between the blade and deck. THe EASIEST way is get an impact and zip it off. :-)

Craftsman 42 inch riding lawn mower is not cutting evenly

The first thing to check is your blades. If one is bent, it will never cut even. It happens a lot hitting roots, antbeds, etc. Mulching blades will bend easier than a straight blade. It's best to take them off and lay one on top of the other to see if they're bent.
