is your external hdd powered by usb only or does it actually need a power supply plugged in also, as there may not be enough power from 1 usb port to power it, even if it's a laptop hdd, it more often than not depends on the caddy the hdd is in than the hdd itself.

clarify what usb hdd you are using.

Hello,

the problem could be from your USB. The USB of your computer might not be powering the drive.

Secondly, the hard drive wire that passes from the computer to the external drive.

Lastly, the Hard drive case could be defective and not make the drive power on.

Therefore, connect the external hard drive to another computer, in other to be sure whether the problem is from your computer's usb port or from the hard drive. This will let us know where to focus our attention.

Let me know what happens thereafter.

Take care.

My external hard drive is not being seen by my computer?

1 of 2 things can be wrong...1 (cable may be loose) unplug the cable (ext HD) connected to pc, now reinsert back into pc..try this once or twice...until you see it appear in my computer....if this is not working and your ext HD came with a CD software..uninstall (make sure ext HD is not connected) software, then reinstall make sure your firewall allows it to be connected....this should do the trick...now plug HD back up to pc...do not format your ext hd unless you really really dont want the data on it (format erases everything)

When you plug it into your usb , goto My Computer , in the list of drives there should be a drive in relation to your usb drive.

USB port problems

You need the motherboard specs, which you can look up on the internet, based on the maker.
With the USB ports, the front ones often don't include power.
So plug a powered 4 port hub into the front port, and then the hub will supply the power after that.

Problem with accessing my external hard drive

It's probably NOT the voltage, but the current available at a given USB port. You might try using a USB cable that has two "A" connectors on one end that connect to the computer, one for power and data, the other is just for extra power. The other end of the cable should have the appropriate connector for your external drive. By connecting the second "A" plug to the computer, you double the current available to the external drive.

VIA needs to stop making USB chipsets... lol... Are you sure you have USB legacy support enabled? Moreover, the default Windows XP drivers are not error free when used with a VIA Rev 5 USB Host Controller because it's actually a VIA Enhanced Host Controller. Every time I have USB problems with the VIA Enhanced Host Controller I go to there website, download the driver, and it usually fixes the problem.

USB 2.0 (VT6202, VT6212, VT6214/L)

Moreover, I have plugged in a Microsoft Wireless Optical Mouse and Windows XP could not detect it until I installed Microsoft Intellipoint; if you can believe that. Try also installing the mouse drivers as well...

You could have System file errors these files are the heart of O/S
whereas the reg is the blood if System file are faulty things do not work properly.
Go to C:\ right click properties / Tools / error check new box popsup
tick little box to fix errors and reboot
On reboot windows will check disk for errors and fix them
