Question about Computers & Internet

2 Answers

Port forwarding hi this is problem for me in nintendo website it says i should open ports on my router to allow my wii to access the internet properley. here is a example: The Wii console may require unrestricted access to several sites across various ports and protocols to function correctly. These addresses and ports vary, and may change in the future without notice. Many software firewalls restrict outbound access. Only if your firewall blocks outbound traffic do you need to enable this traffic:TCP: Allow traffic to all destinations on ports: 28910, 29900, 29901, 29920, 80, and 443UDP: Allow all traffic to all destinations. (Necessary for peer-to-peer connections and game play)but here is the confusing part in my routers ports page there are two fields: trigger port and public port and two radio buttens under trigger type TCP and UDP and two more radio buttons under public type TCP and UDP. but i dont know where to put the numbers in off nintendos site. i have looked on the internet for a guide but these are too confusing. please could someone explain very easily (as this is the most confusing thing about computers for me) and i have never done it before. please could someome tell me what to do. as i cant connect online and play with others on my wii via nintendo wi-fi connection. please could you explain it as easily as possible and tell me what it all means. thanks robert

I would like to help, but you have to let me know which router you are using, because all the settings you are mentioning have to be set in there.
Please be as specific as possible:

    1. Make (i.e. Linksys)

    2. Model (i.e. WRT54G)

    3. Version (i.e. v2.2)
You usually find that information on the bottom sticker on your router. Come back here, leave a comment and I will check back on this post. (Don't start a new post, or I will not able to find it!)

    See you later!

Hi Robert,

let's see if I can shine a little light on your confusion.
To the "port" business:
Ports are simply connection points for different softwares in a computer. You know that websites usually communicate on port 80. That means that port 80 has to be open in a firewall in order to get to a web page. If your port 80 in your firewall is closed - no communication is happening.
Let's say you host a webpage at home, but you don't want anyone to get there easily. You could choose another port (i.e. 801) and if you want to access the page from the road, you had to type "http://www.mypage.com:801" and open that port on your router. If you now want to give access to everyone, but don't want to change your server settings, all you have to do is to re-firect the traffic in your router by saying: "Redirect incoming requests for port 80 to port 801." (This is the public port 80 to the LAN port 801.)

Does this make sense to you?

So...your game on the Wii usually uses ports 28910, 29900, 29901, 29920, 80, and 443. If none of the ports is used by another application, then public and LAN ports are identical (no redirect necessary.)

And here we go:

  1. Open a web browser like internet explorer or Firefox. Enter the IP address of your router in the address bar of your browser. By default the IP address should be set to 192.168.1.1.
  2. You should see a box prompting you for your password. Enter your password now. By default your password is admin. Click the Log in button to log in to your router.
  3. Click the Firewall link.
  4. Select Disable from the Firewall Enable/Disable drop down box. Click the Apply button. Click the Virtual Servers link.
  5. Click the Add button.
  6. The Wii requires you to forward the 80,443,28910, 29900, 29901, and 29920. Go ahead and enter the settings into the Virtual Servers menu. It looks like this:

    IP Address: (your Wii IP)
Protocol Type: TCP (to be safe: "TCP & UDP")
    LAN port: 80
    public port: 80
    Enable: (tick on)
  7. Repeat the "Add" command and put in all 6 ports.
  8. To open ALL UDP ports your range is 1 - 65535.
Don't forget to click "Save" when your done!!!

A couple more things:
  1. I would feel rather uncomfortable to open ALL UDP ports - it is like leaving your front door unlocked and every portscanner will find you wide open. But if you have to...
  2. To make sure that the IP address you entered for your Wii will stay always the same. you should edit the "DHCP Clients List". Look at your manual page 37/38 (if you don't have one, you can get it here.) This ensures that the ports are always forwarded to you Wii and not to your computer. (If you have questons about this - let me know.)
  3. And while you're on it: there is a new firmware out: version 2.06T13 from 2007. You can get it here.
But ATTENTION!!! Little nasty line says:
"Special Instructions: A reset back to factory default is necessary after firmware upgrade. You will need to reconfig after upgrade. Do not use previous config backup's after upgrade." - Make sure to upgrade BEFORE you change all the port settings etc. otherwise you will have ot do it again.
  4. There is a cool webpage to test if your port is open. Go and check it out: http://www.canyouseeme.org/
Oof...So - I think I've got everything... in case I did forget something or it is not clear to you, just come back and leave a comment and we look at it.

Good luck and enjoy!

    Hi Robert,

I looked in the manual again and you are right - it is somehow confusing. I would just try it out: turn the firewall back on and see if gaming still works. The way I understand is, that the firewall is on in general, but through your settings you allow certain ports to be open. the other ports should still be protected. It is possible, that if you turn your firewall back on, the gaming ports are blocked as well. Documentation is not really precise there.

A "port scanner" is a software that looks for open ports. It can used by hackers to find a vulnerability on your computer and start an attack on an open port. That's why you should have only necessary ports open. read more on open ports here. Oepn a command prompt (Win+R key) and type "netstat" and see all currently open ports. But don't panic - it is normal to have ports open, otherwise your browser wouldn't work!
THere are some webpages like the one I sent you, which will simply ping your IP address and see if that port is open. That's good to chekc of your router settings are done correctly. If you are try out a portscanning software, see here.

Is there anything else? - Let me know!

How do you connect wii to internet through t.v.

Hey. This is a common question for people who own a Wii since it doesn't have a built in ethernet port to connect to through your router or modem.
There are two possible options for you to connect your Wii to the internet:
1.] You can buy a $10 USB adapter here that will allow you to connect it just like you would any other computer in your home: http://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-LAN-Adapter-Nintendo-Wii-Port/dp/B003C3WYOM
2.] You can use its built-in WiFi card to connect to wireless internet in your home. If you don't have a wireless router or wireless access points then this probably is not a viable option.
Good luck!

You will need to port forward your router you can search for the ports that wii uses. see below on how to port forward

Once you open the set up interface of the router, you will be able to find the settings on the router where you can open the ports for the particular program.
If you are opening the ports for a special device in your network, then you must know the IP address of that device.
For example, wireless camera, DVR, X-box, Play station ...
You can choose the option PORT FORWARDING for a special device application.
If you just want to open the ports for all the network, then you can choose PORT TRIGGERING

For Linksys Router.

You have opened the set up interface of the router. You will see Application and Gaming TAB at the top.
If you click on that tab you will find different Sub tabs.
Click on Port Triggering => Here you can open the port numbers for the network.
Click On Port forwarding if you want to open the ports for a special device in the network.
Click Save settings once you open the ports on the router.

For D-link router

You have opened the set up interface of the router.
You will see Network settings in the left hand side panel of the page.
Click on Network settings and go to the Advanced TAB at the top.
Now you will find the option. Pot Forwarding in the left hand panel.
Here you can open the ports on the router.

BELKIN wireless router

You have opened the set up interface of the router.
Click on Virtual Servers under Firewall in the menu on the left
Click Enabled. Type a general description of the application i.e.. Remote Desktop. Type the port(s) specified by the program manufacture for both of the Inbound port fields. Select TCP, UDP, or BOTH for the Type.Private IP address: Enter the IP address of the computer you want grant access too. Type the port(s) specified by the program manufacture for both of the Private port fields.Click the Apply Changes button.

NETGEAR Router.

You have opened the set up interface of the router.
Click on Port Triggering under Advanced menu.
Change the value of Port Triggering Timeout as 20 Click on Add Service. Specify a Unique/User Defined name under Service Name. Ex: Mails, VPN. Specify the Service User as Any (if all the computers in the network are port triggered or if a single computer on a network is port triggered specify the IP address of the computer). Select the Service Type of the port to be triggered
Ex: TCP . Specify the Trigger Port (The port to be triggered). Select the Connection Type of Inbound Connection. Specify the Starting and Ending Port for Inbound Connection. Click Apply to accept changes. Your router is now set up for port triggering..

Once you have all the wireless settings of the router, you are ready to connect the WII to the wireless network.

Nintendo WII

Go to Wii Options in the lower left. Click on Wii Settings to the right. From this first list, click the right arrow. Now on page 2, click on Internet. Then click Connection Settings. From this list, click Connection 1. Then, click Wireless Connection...
and then click Search for an Access Point.
It will briefly search for any access points and when this screen comes up, click OK.
The following will be a list of nearby access points. If the one you are looking for doesn't show up, click Try again. Then, click the one you have access to...
When the following screen appears, click OK...
and OK again.
It will test the connection...
And if successful, the following will drop down. Click Yes to update Wii.
Sometimes the above screen is false, saying there is an update when there isn't and the following will appear...
Now, back in Wii System Settings, click on WiiConnect24.
From the following list click WiiConnect24.
Click On and then Confirm to save your settings. This feature allows for updates to be seemlessly sent to your Wii so you don't have to do the final step every time.
Ok, the final step, just as a way to make sure your Wii is up to date. Click the right arrow from the 2nd page of Wii System Settings.
Click Wii System Update...
click yes...
it will test your connection for a few seconds...
an update screen may quickly come up and tell you there is an update (whether or not your Wii actually needs one)
and the following screen will appear. Click Wii Menu to finish.

Trouble connecting to the internet on X-box ,Play station or WII ?

You can try to reduce the MTU settings on the router. if the MTU on the router is set to 1500 then change the MTU to 1365. Also you will need to open the ports on the router.

For WII port numbers are - 28910, 29900, 29901, 29920, 80, 443.

I am trying to open up port 25565 on my NETGEAR WNDR3300 dual band router. I access my default gateway through an internet browser and forward the port correctly, but when I go to a website to check to...

Hi,

If you have ports in your router , even it it shows that the port is closed in http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ if the application for which you have forwarded the ports works then no issue with that. If it doesn't work then we need to know who is your internet service provider , because its is a DSL connection which works in the Dynamic configuration then its obvious the port will not be forwarded beacuse of double NAT. Inorder to fix this you have to bridge the DSL modem .

Thanks & Regards,
Prema.

Hangs with Bittorrent

That is because you need to open a port on router with the same number assigned to your torrent client.

You need to check port number on bittorrent configuration, then access router control panel typing router IP on internet explorer address bar and configure the router to open the port.

Belkin F5D5231-4 - create a wireless access point

I have had good luck with the NetGear Rangemax WPN824. It has multiple antennas that are supposed to provide better range, and your kids will like the blue blinking lights.
http://www.netgear.com/Products/RoutersandGateways/RangeMaxWirelessRoutersandGateways.aspx

Nintendo has a list of incompatible wireless routers:
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/onlineWirelessRouterIncompatible.jsp

and the Rangemax is not incompatible.

Wii can use 802.11B or G.
http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/wii/en_na/onlineWirelessRouterChoose.jsp

Since the Rangemax is both a wireless access point and a router (with 4 ethernet ports), you can just replace your existing router rather than plugging this router into your other one.
