I have a 18hp b&s vanguard engine, the mower sat up all winter and I'm now ready to use it but it's completely dry of oil, all of it has leaked out , can you tell me why??

All of the oil has leaked out of my ridding mower, it has sat up all winter and after pulling it out this spring I noticed the oil on the floor, and I need to find out why before adding more oil or attempting to start.

Briggs and Stratton engines have a quite common problem with the bolts coming loose over time where the two halves of the engine meet. Most times tightening the bolts will solve the problem, sometimes the motor has to be disassembled and a new gasket installed. This *may* be where your oil went? It would either be that or the bottom seal around the crankshaft. I would add some oil and see if you could see where its leaking at, but if I had to guess, it would be one of those two places.

SOURCE: cannot pull rope out to start mower

Bad news , Mower has sit up too long and the piston / crankshaft has become rusty and froze in place. (fix) buy some liquid wrench it comes in a can at your local hardware store...Tilt the mower onto its front wheels and remove the spark plug. Fill the Cylindar with the oil and leave it for a couple days. after a few days lean the mower back and attempt to pour out the left over oil. Then (Check Your Oil level) preferable replace old oil and pull choke..and start mower...if the engine is still frozen (Buy a New mower) 125bucks Sears.

SOURCE: Can't pull my starter rope on my Lawn Mower-seems locked up---

If its a Murray lawn mower like mine, it may be using a Briggs and Stratton engine. it sounds like the spring is broken or out of its track You can find the right part which is called a "pulley/spring assembly" by locating the model number of the engine. There are instructions on how to find this at: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/repair_parts/

SOURCE: Problem: How to start the mower (Ariens A173K22).

For initial start up, I suggest removing the air filter off of the intake to the carburetor. Then get an aerosol spray can of carburetor/choke cleaner at auto parts store or Walmart. Your next step is to open the choke and the throttle of the mower and spray a couple shots into the carburetor throat. Then, choke the carburetor and immediately pull the starter cord.If it fails to attempt to run, repeat the process. I would get your manual, but I need the serial number off of the mower. You provided the model number, try to find the serial number and input that info here to download a manual. I think you can order a printed one from here as well.

Simplicity landlord dlx tractor mower

Try looking at the Governor on the engine. You can usually adjust this out at the Gov arm by loosening and tightening back when smooth. Could also still be dirt in the jets. Make sure all the small holes on he carb are clear and check the float height too.

check around the sump breather pipe. When you replace the bottom seal it is advisable to inspect the shaft as if there is a groove there the new seal will not work as intended.

Yes, that's it! You bend it down (I usually clamp it, since it will flip back up again) and drain away!

We have a riding mower w/a 18hp 4 cycle onan engine in it. my husband rebuilt it last winter. it runs but oil is coming out of the exhaust. could it be to much oil in the reserve?

Yes. The oil reserve has probably become contaminated with fuel. Check the oil level, if it is over full change the oil and fill to the correct level. Also fit an inline fuel tap and turn the tap off when the mower is not in use. This will prevent a repeat of the problem. Regards Phil.

Briggs and Stratton Vanguard twin stopping running and wont start

A couple of things you might try...off the shelf from Lowe's or walmart is engine repair in a bottle...I've used it and it works, but read instructions. If that doesn't work, you may have a lacquer build up on carb. Pull the fuel bowl off carefully and check for a clear opening in the fuel pickup as they may be clogged. Remove gas tank and flush it and then make sure it's really dry...replace fuel filter and install two in series in place of one. Also, try to find a gas station that sells ethanol free gas and use it for your small engines. Hope this helps some.
