Question about Televison & Video

2 Answers

My Onkyo TX-SR875 suddenly stopped detecting/processing/playing bitstream audio inputs over HDMI but I still get video with no problem. If I set any of my source devices that provide an LPCM output option (Oppo 980H, PS3) to LPCM output, the receiver will play the sound and display MultiChannel on the front display as expected. However, with my DirecTV HR20 and Xbox360, I do not have a PCM/LPCM output option (that I'm aware of) and do not get any audio. The exception to this is when I turn on HDMI Audio Out on the receiver to ON and route audio to the TV speakers as a passthrough, I do get sound. As soon as I turn HDMI Audio Out off, the receiver displays "2 Channel Stereo" but no longer emits any sound. I just replaced an older TV set in the system with a Samsung LN52B750 a week ago and also had the Onkyo's main firmware, DSPs, and HDMI firmware updated when I had the receiver in to repair a well-known defect with the front display failing. However, everything worked fine with the receiver and with the TV attached to the receiver via HDMI with narry a hiccup for several days before this issue arose so I think it unlikely it's some sort of handshaking issue. Any help is appreciated!

Thanks for the initial response. I was looking for something of a more detailed answer as to what might be plaguing the receiver. I've already ruled out the possibility the cable(s) were bad and, as mentioned, this happens with multiple source devices in the system.

Hi,
Please select the format on the disc it will display it on the receivers display. If your player is setup correctly for the Bitstream and still you are seeing PCM Multichannel then you would have to go into the menu of the receiver to Hardware setup.
In Hardware go to HDMI then to Audio out it should be set to OFF. Once you have this set to off then you would get the surround mode that you have chosen to display on the receiver.
Thanks.

HDMI Output with my Onkyo 875 Receiver

Hello, the TX-SR875 does not support up-converting from component or S-video to HDMI. Is the model number correct? You stated the receiver is "brand new". This model is from 2007. Thank you, Onkyo USA

No HDMI Output

My configuration:
ZONE 1 (living room)
DishNetwork Dual Tuner DVR Tuner 1 [S-Video out] -> [S-Video in] ONKYO TX-SR875 [HDMI out] -> [HDMI in] Sony KDS-60A3000 rear projection TV

ZONE 2 (living room)
DishNetwork Dual Tuner DVR Tuner 2 [Composite Video out] -> [Composite Video in] ONKYO TX-SR875 [Composite Video out] -> [Composite Video in] Samsung AQUOS LCD TV

Problem:
ONKYO receiver stops sending video signal to my ZONE 1 Sony TV through the HDMI connection. ZONE 2 may still receive video. (NOTE: the issue might be related to the upconverter circuitry?)

Symptom:
I couldn't see any video, but I could hear the Tuner 1 audio through my ONKYO. An important clue is that I couldn't see ONKYO's on-screen display menu on my TV when hitting the [Setup] button on my remote. But, I could see my TV's Sony-based menus and display options.

Solution:
1. Put all ZONES in Standby mode using the remote. Hit these buttons on remote: [Receiver], then [Standby]. [Receiver], [ZONE2], then [Standby], [Receiver], [ZONE3], then [Standby]. You should NOT see any lights on the ONKYO except maybe one red led near the power button.
2. Pull the power plug out of the back of the ONKYO, and leave unplugged for 20-30 seconds. Turning off any power center it is connected to isn't enough. You MUST unplug the power from the back of the ONKYO for 20-30 seconds.
3. Reconnect the power cord to the ONKYO.
4. Using the remote, set ZONE1 to a video source known to be working. If you don't see video, try leaving the power cord off for a longer period.

I know it sounds too simple to work, but that's what brought the video back for me the few times the video stopped displaying. Hope it works for you.

No display on my sr875 the next time i turned it on..i have no clue waht happend..it was just working fine yesterday, now, it suddenly shows one issue that needs to be resolve..i did everything i cud do but...

The 10 Ohms resistor R9304 in series with the the 44V display power supply was open.

How to find it:
Remove the to cover.
On the right hand side of the front panel you will see on the side a wide white flat cable going toward the back of the receiver.
Beside it is a 4 black wire band connecting the front panel to a 3x4cm power PCB which is parallel with the front panel inside the receiver (attached to the front frame).
It has visible on the left side a diode bridge and a fuse - above the fuse you can find the R9304, a SFR16 package (1x3.5mm) marked BrownBlackBlack.
Check continuity.Replace if open wit a 1W resistor
Good job ONKYO, save 1/3 of a penny...

For the DIY:
As an added step I replaced the R9304 with a 2W 47R resistor, replaced the series transistor regulator Q9301 (tall TO92) with a bigger package (isolated TO220) and one of the two series 22V zenners from the base - D9310 - with a 10V one.
Output voltage drops from 44V to 34V, display is slightly dimmer but overall stress is down.

Good luck!
