It is not a emachine. It is a Gateway laptop. The problem is: NTLDR is compressed Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart. It repeats the same cycle. Either I recover the system by the original Window XP CD or press C+A+D.

I believe he explained what os he had by what recovery cd he was intending to use, however regarless of what make the pc is from personal experience, i would use the xp boot disc to boot to the recovery console which you get to from booting from your xp disc, and follow the below: To boot to the recovery console follow these steps: 1. Insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer. Click(or press any key) to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted. 2. When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console. 3. When prompted type "1" or if you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console. 4. When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER. 5. then type the following: cd \ attrib -c ntldr exit rebot if it does not and your pc should work again, come back here if this does not work.

After (successful) restoration of desktop 838GM, boot-up get stuck at black screen with message that "NTLDR is compressed, press ctrl alt del to restart". When I do the ctrl alt del, computer reboots but...

The startup files are corrupted. You need to put the windows disk in the DVD and make the computer boot off that when it starts up. Booting off the DVD may need to be set in the BIOS if the machine does not do it automatically.
When the window comes up you select install windows.
Second option is repair my computer. Then follow the prompts.

NTRL is compressed Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

First you need to boot to the recovery console.

To boot to the recovery console follow these steps:
5. Now you should be at the comman prompt and ready to repair the ntldr file!

Now all you need to do is enter the following commands(in order) and each command on a new line just like you see them here:
cd \
attrib -c ntldr
exit

Your computer should now reboot, and everything "should" work!

Please rate this fixya

Compressed boot manager

Windows Vista includes a new Boot Manager (BootMgr) that replaces the old NT Loader (Ntldr).

If the boot partition no longer can be found, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart

The Windows Boot Configuration Data file is missing required information

More Info MS KB 919529
More Info MS KB 927391

This can usually be solved by checking the boot devices, and if no problems found then use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair".

If by accident having compressed the entire boot partition, then Vista will display the following error: BOOTMGR is compressed. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart
This can usually be solved by using Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) and perform a "Startup Repair". If that fails then use WinRE to enter the "Command Prompt" and execute these commands:
  • compact /U C:\bootmgr
  • compact /U C:\ntldr
