You need to purchase Motorola Phone Tools in order for it to work. I'm running 64-bit Vista Ultimate on my laptop, and you can't do much with the phone without Moto Phone Tools. It's fully compatible with Vista, don't worry about that!
If u want to connect ur mobile with laptop with data cable then u need to install cable drivers from that CD which u have got with ur mobile after wards u need to turn on modem from ur mobile then after dialling u can access internet on ur laptop also

I have the same problem: I have been given a Motorola Ming A1200, but just the phone. Not the software CD that came with it.
I bought the latest Motorola PhoneTools (5.1.0?) but it does not seem to work with the Ming.
I need a way to back up what is on the phone.
Actually, I am okay on transferring most stuff off the Ming by hand - moving it to the TransFlash, then mounting the TransFlash as a USB disk.
However, I have Java ME apps (midlets) that save stuff as JavaME R
I do NOT have a dataplan, so cannot offload that way.
