SOURCE: Replacement Memory Battery

The Garmin GPS III and III plus use a tabbed lithium coin battery. Its is a Panasonic BR-2032. You can buy these for about $2 from larger electronic suppliers. The problem is that the shipping or minimum order will make that $2 battery cost you about $25. For you cheap guys there is a solution. You buy a CP-2032 and a coin holder. $2-3 for the battery and $1-$2 for the holder. 6 screws to open the case, cut the wires close to the battery as possible. Solder the wires to the coin holder (good idea to heat shrink or cover the solder joints), put in the new battery and you are done the easy bit. You will most likely have to trim away some of the plastic on the holder such as legs or other things sticking out. Unfortunately you can't really do this with out fitting it in the case and you don't want to do that until you have the holder on the wires so it will be in the right place. Once you get that, simply play with it until you can put the screws back in. And tighten gently. Not too much or the gasket will be squeezed too far out. Put tAA'sx AA's back in, take it outside so it has an unobstructed view of the sky, set it down and go for a long coffee or three. It will now download the almanac and any other data which can take 15 minutes or more depending on the satellites. You should see a low battery error and other errors such as saved data lost. Ignore these. You can put it on a external power plug or just leave it off with the AA's and in 5-7 days it will have reset the error as it figures it it now charged. You get the battery error even with a new fresh charged battery. I think there is a Garmin reset code to force this but none of the codes I have tried have worked.

No, the fuse should be inline on the positive power lead. If one is not supplied, you should add your own to the positive (red) wire.

SOURCE: New Garmin nuvi 255w suddenly not working

Those are severe symptoms.
A Hard Reset is a good idea after a firmware upgrade.

There are three levels of getting your Garmin 255W's attention and correcting bad habits (ie: not loading maps or locking up).

The first is 'soft reset'. There is a reset button along the bottom of your gps. Push and hold it until it restarts. If you cannot locate your reset button, sliding the power switch to OFF and holding for 8 seconds should do the same thing.

The second method is a 'hard reset' or 'clear all user data', to restore factory defaults.

The Hard Reset procedure has been known to delete your Favorites, so back them up beforehand.

  1. From the Nuvi drive, copy '/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx' to a backup location on your computer.
  2. After the hard reset, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Nuvi, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
  3. On the next power cycle, the Favorites will be read from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on the Nuvi where they are actually stored.
Perform the Hard Reset:

*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit

  1. Power the unit off.
  2. Remove the battery and wait several minutes.
  3. Install the battery.
  4. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
  5. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?"prompt appears.
  6. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. This resets all your location settings and user preferences.

The third method is a firmware upgrade via Garmin's Webupdater, or the myGarmin site.

Run through these fixes to get your Nuvi running as good as new.
I hope that helps.

Froze on garmin screen won't give directions

Could be a battery problem not having enough charge to get past the Garmin screen you might need to replace the battery or it might need to be reset.

Not knowing which model of Garmin it is makes it hard to provide a correct solution. ?

If your Garmin Nuvi 1300 is freezing up or not working correctly, a soft reset can be performed. A soft reset unfreezes the unit and brings you back to the main menu. If a soft reset does not solve the problem, or if you are selling your unit and wish to erase all of your saved information, a hard reset can be done. A hard reset restores the original factory settings to the unit. Once the information is deleted, it can not be restored. Turn on the Garmin Nuvi 1300. Press and hold down the "Power" button. Release the button when the main menu is displayed. The unit is now ready to be used. b> Hard Reset b> Turn the Garmin Nuvi 1300 off. Press your finger against the bottom-right corner of the Garmin display screen. Leave your finger in place as you power the unit on. Release your finger when the display screen asks, "Do you want to erase all user data?" Use your finger to tap "Yes." The unit will begin to reboot. Do not use the unit until the main menu is displayed. The reset process should take about 45 seconds. Hope this helps.

Touch screen doesn't work

Have you tried the screen recalibration; by touching the upper right of the screen for 30 seconds or so while turning on the unit. This usually cures the problem.
Next try; sliding the "Power" key to the left position and hold it for eight to ten seconds to reset the Garmin. I have attached a link to the Garmin manuals for your 255W.
Once you get it going you should update your unit also at the Garmin site. The updates will fix the software glitches.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 660. Serial # 12P414268. I turn on my GPS and I can't key in my PIN number. Nothing is working. I recently returned from a trip to Kansas. The unit worked great until we were...

Power off your Garmin 660 unit. Press on continuously the upper top left corner of screen and then power on the unit by pressing once on the Power button. You should be prompted to clear all user data, or asked if do you really want to start up in maintenance mode. Press "Yes" to reset (warning: all data will be erased and lost, so backup before proceeding) or enter maintenance mode.
To back up your Garmin.
  • From the garmin drive, copy '/Garmin/GPX/current.gpx' to a backup location on your computer.
  • After the hard reset, copy your backed up 'current.gpx' from your computer back to the '/Garmin/GPX/' folder on the Garmin, but be sure to rename it 'temp.gpx'.
  • On the next power cycle, the Favorites will be read from 'temp.gpx' into the non-user accessible memory area on the Garmin where they are actually stored
  • You can also try powering off the unit and hitting the reset button under the antenna, or try the information above but pressing firmly the lower right side of the screen.
This should reset your Garmin then I would suggest updating your device at the Garmin site. I will attach a link.

Touch screen not responding at all. Garmin powers up okay.

This is Garmin's response to me after having the same problem on a 2 year old Nuvi 650: We are no longer replacing or repairing this model unit. However, let me give you some steps to try to calibrate the screen of your unit. The following 'Fix' did not work. I won't be buying another Garmin.
To recalibrate the touchscreen on your nuvi 600 series device please follow the steps below:

    1. Plug the device into the computer via USB data cable
    2. Double click My Computer (Mac Users can skip this step)
    3. Double Click the Garmin or nuvi drive
    4. Double click the Garmin folder
    5. Delete the GUPDATE.GCD file (if this file is not on the device please skip to the next step)
    6. Unplug the GPS device from the computer
    7. Power the device off
    8. Press and hold the Power button
    9. After a short period a screen should appear that says Touch Dot
    10. Release the Power button
    11. Touch the dots as they move around the screen.

Your touchscreen should now be recalibrated.

If the screen is still not responding, then the unit will need to be replaced with a new unit at this time.

I have a Garmin 885 the sceen does not work. touch keys do not work. I cannot get past the Garmin start up when plugged in . when I unplug it I get the warning page and select ok and get pge with wheree ti...

I recommend attempting a hard reset of your Garmin Nuvi 885.
Then I would upgrade the system software to the latest version. This often brings back unresponsive Nuvis.

    Perform the Hard Reset
    1. Power the unit off.
    2. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on.
    3. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?"prompt appears.
    4. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot.
    Upgrade the System Software

The upgrade software is a download available from Garmin. Installation steps are detailed here.

    I hope that helps.
