Turn on my PS2 and I get a read disc error. Can I have the directions to fix this?

Disc Read Errors (DREs)

The PlayStation 2 was infamous for the number of disc read errors that occurred. There are a number of causes for this problem and a number of fixes:

  1. Clean the disc: Dust or smudges from fingerprints can cause disc reading problems. Use a high quality cleaning cloth and remove all smudges from the disc by lightly wiping outward from the center hub. Do not use a circular motion.
  2. Clean the disc drive: If not the disc itself, dust buildup in the drive is often the culprit. For the tech savvy, you may remove the disc drive, and gently clean the assembly with a cleaning cloth. For a less intrusive approach, use a can of compressed air, and attempt to blow the dust out from the vents and the disc tray, though this may also cause dust to settle where it is not desired.
  3. Repair the disc: If your game disc is scratched, it is sometimes possible to recover the disc with a disc repair kit.
  4. Ensure proper venthilation: To avoid overheating, make sure that your PlayStation 2 is placed in a well ventilated area, and that the vents are not obstructed.

What Is It? The Disc Read error is a simple one. It simply means that the Xbox is unable to read the disc that you have placed in the drive. In the majority of instances, this error has nothing to do with the functionality of the console, but, rather, hinges on the actual disc that has been inserted into the DVD tray.
Disc-Related Errors The most common reason for Disc Read errors are related to the disc itself. Numerous conditions can keep the laser from reading the information contained within the game, DVD or CD in the DVD drive.
  • The disc is scratched - Game discs, audio CDs and DVDs can become scratched very easily. Usually this is because they have not been kept in their cases, but left in the open. Simply resting two discs atop one another can scratch the bottom disc. If discs are sufficiently scratched, the data contained on them will be inaccessible to the drive.
  • The disc is dirty/dusty - Dirt and dust can build up on the faces of discs left exposed. When sufficient dirt or dust has built up, it can block the laser beam used to read the disc, resulting in a Disc Read error.
  • The disc is the incorrect region - DVDs come in formats called "regions." These regions match the region specified in the software of the DVD player. Some games also have these regions. If the region of the DVD and that of the player do not match, the disc will not play.
Can I Fix These Errors? Repairing disc-related issues may or may not be possible. If the cause is simply dirt and dust, you can certainly repair the disc. However, if the cause is due to extreme scratching, then replacing the disc is likely your only choice. If the disc is from the incorrect region or from another country, you will have to obtain the correct region. Returning the disc to the retailer for exchange may work.
Non-Disc Related Errors As mentioned, there can be some Disc Read errors that have nothing to do with the disc at all. In this case, it's time to troubleshoot the Xbox.
  • First, simply try to reboot the machine. Often, this will flush the cache or other error and allow the game to operate or the disc to play.
  • Second, try removing the hard drive and/or memory units. Once removed, reboot the console and attempt to load the disc with the hard drive and memory out of the unit. If this works, you can simply shutdown and reinstall the hard drive.
  • Attempt to play the disc in another type of player. For instance, attempt to play the DVD in another DVD player or the CD in a CD player. If the disc plays in these players, you may need to clean the Xbox DVD player.
  • Check to make sure that all air vents are open and are able to provide sufficient airflow. Overheating can cause Disc Read errors, as well. In addition, ensure that the power supply is unobstructed and uncovered. Much like the Xbox 360, the power supply can become quite hot and can cause errors if unventilated.
  • Check for disc tray errors. Depress the eject button and watch the tray extend. If the tray partially extends and then retracts immediately, you may have a problem with the DVD drive. If your Xbox is under warranty, this can be replaced at no charge. However, if you are out of warranty, you can install a new DVD drive on your own.
  • As a note, make sure that the new DVD drive comes with the same firmware as your original console, or you may experience additional error codes after the installation of the new DVD drive.

Unable to read disc check wii operations manual

You can try cleaning your wii console. Take it apart (this will void your warranty howerver) and take some q-tips, rubbing alcahol, and an air compressor or can of compressed air. Dampen the q-tips with alcahol and GENTLY wipe off the laser lens. Next take your compressed air and blow the dust off EVERYTHING. If you don't want to void your warranty you can take a can of compressed (with the small plastic tube connected) and gently insert the stem into the CD drive, don't insert it too far, just a little bit and blow it out and hope you knocked the dust off the lens. If you can play other games you can take some toothpaste (yes, toothpaste) and rub some over the clear side of your disc (the part the laser reads) and then with a soft, lent free cloth or soft toilet paper, rub the toothpaste off in circular motion. Then lighty dampen you cloth or toilet paper and rub the rest of the toothpaste off starting from the center of the disc and wiping straight out to the edge.

I have personally done this on several CD games and Audio CD's and it's always worked for me. Hope this helps!

Fable 2 for Xbox 360: game wont read says put disc in xbox 360 but i am ...

One. Make sure the bar code on the band on the inner ring is perfectley clean and dusted. Two blow into the disc drive to make sure there is no dust on the laser. Three, get a professional to look at it such as a person at Game or at Gamestation. Four, try replacing the copy (NOT RECOMMENDED YOU COULD WASTE MONEY)

My xbox 360 has stopped reading all discs

Take a can of air and blow some air into the drive to be sure no specs of dust or dirt is affecting the laser.

If that doesn't work then its going to be either the laser or the dvd drive that is bad. Replacing the laser is cheaper but more time consuming cause you have to take apart the system then the drive to replace the laser, whereas the drive you just take apart the system and swap out the drive. You can get the drives from Ebay all the time.

Ps3 wont read games

Try shutting down the ps3, unplug it from the wall and replug it. If it continues to not read it, try another game. If it can't read another game try a blu-ray movie if you have one. If it doesn't ready any of those then your blu-ray laser has failed. If that's the case then you will need to call Sony for a repair =(.

Hope this helps.
