Open Question

XV1000 1985 starts smoothly, but periodically runs on 1 cylinder. Tried changing coils, same problem. RPM meter drops to zero when problem is active. How can I test Ignition box??

I have had some problems with carburators being difficelt to adjust, but a trip in ultrasound fixed that (I hope), but now it only runs on one cylinder in periods, and when it does, RPM gauge drops to zero.

Need Make/Model/Year/Engine Model/Deck Size, and hours on meter if you have one. A short description of the events preceding the beginning of the problem is also helpful.

Several possibilities:
1. Needs a valve adjustment or a valve job. Start with adjustment.
2. Needs new plugs. Start with new plugs.
3. Shear pin under flywheel is slightly damaged throwing off the timing. Remove flywheel examine shear pin for any damage. Just go ahead and replace it; if it even looks nicked or sliced.
4. Coil, or spark plug wire, is going bad. Very hard to test a coil for weakness without test equipment that the average person doesn't have. Check the first 3 problems, first. If it still backfires, then replace coil.
5. The other thing that causes backfire is fuel mixture too lean. On a small engine this is not usually an adjustment problem. It may be the fuel system/carburetor is dirty or partially clogged. It may also be an air leak in the gaskets of the intake manifold. If nothing else solves the backfire, remove the carburetor and clean or rebuild it. This is the least likely of the options so save it for last.

If compression is good and cylinder leakage is minimal, but a cylinder is misfiring or shows up weak in a power balance test, it indicates a fuel delivery or ignition problem (fouled spark plug or bad plug wire). A power balance, or cylinder balance, test should be run on a twin cylinder engine.

If an engine is hard starting, runs rough, misses or lacks power, run a cylinder balance test to determine if both cylinders are operating to their full potential. You will need an engine tachometer, a spark tester, and an insulated screwdriver.

1. Using the spark tester, with the plugs in, start engine and verify spark is equally good on both cylinders. Remove spark tester.
2. Connect engine tachometer.
3. Run engine at top no load speed. Note rpm.
4. Ground one cylinder spark plug with screwdriver. Note rpm.
5. Ground other cylinder with screwdriver. Note rpm.

The difference in RPM between the cylinders should be less than 75 rpm. If the difference between the two cylinders is greater than 75 rpm, the cylinder with the least rpm loss is the weakest and is a potential problem.

Note: If the spark plugs are new this could be an indication of a weak coil. Of course it could also be compression (rings), or valves.

Reasons for cylinder misfires


Ford coil on plug systems are multi strike ignition (spark) under 1300 rpm then go to single strike a single cylinder misfire can be created by several things . #1 Test engine compression on a cranking engine compression it should be around 150 lbs but if gauge reads different COMPARE to other cylinders that work fine #2 check engine running compression this will be around 120 lbs then rev over 2000 rpm and check pressure drop again COMPARE to other cylinders that work fine. any drop would indicate valve train problems. #3 All internal engine is fine then external problems are present vacuum leaks and or fuel injection volume is low.

the cold start RPM is wrong.
its NOT THE ENGINE. !!!
the engine controls are out of control.
vacuum air leaks are the reason.
or stuck open ISC /iAC air valve .
or throttle cable set too tight,
of the many. i can find it in 5min flat hands on.
but telling how to find air leaks is a 20 page doc.
you contradicted , idles find then 3000 rpm idle.
which is it.?

that tacho meter is x1000
so 3 x 1000 is 3000 RPM.. all cars
and is 2 times the legal idle.
and 3 times hot. 800 is normal hot
0.8 on the dial zero point eight. = 800

Engine misfireunder load


I would check the coils...In have seen some fail at under 80k miles but mostly you can get well over 100k miles... I do not know if you have a great scanner or not, but what I do is use a scanner and run a power balance test and this graphs the cylinders performance and coil output.Also you can try cranking the car and let it get to operating temp,then go to each coil and disconnect it,you should have a rpm drop,if you do not get the rpm drop then that coil is bad.Last if you can test the resistance of the coil with a multimeter...Make sure you have the car scanned with a good scanner 1st to point you in the right direction.

You have a large intake leak, un metered air leaking after your maf. Grab a can of intake cleaner, start your cAr and start spraying your intake and any vacuum lines. Any change in idle activity is where I would double check

Check engine light turned on. autozone run diagnostic check come up with engine 4 misfire. engine start ok but for a while rpm drops and engine stop. i have changed fuel filter and check fuel injectors...


Is there a coil per cylinder? That's sounds like a faulty coil, that can cause a misfire in a cylinder. It's relatively easy to test. Start your engine and when the car rpm's drop, remove the coil socket from cylinder number one and if the car hesitates more that means that cylinder is working good, then reconnect and continue with cylinder number two, remove the coil socket and look very careful for hesitation and reconnect and so long until you check all off the cylinders. If you disconnect a coil of any cylinder and the engine remains the same, doesn't hesitate more, then that cylinder isn't working, so change that coil. Begin with cylinder number 4 if you want to cause of the scanner reference.

Ihave a 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5s. Im trying to figure out how to determine which coil is burned up so i can replace it. any help would be greatly appreciated


To find the fault coil as the engine is running disconnect one coil at a time. With the engine running and you disconnect a coil and the engine and the there is a sudden change that coil is good and it does contibute, no to find a bad one if you disconnect the the coil and nothing changes you got a bad one, bad ones dont contibute

Oil pressure drops to zero after warmed up or below 2700 RPM


Check the oil pressure with a test guage, if the finding are the same, the look at your oil filter, pump, pickup, or pressure relief valve.....
