How to sew buttons on a Singer 2273

Perhaps the manual would be helpful:

Something I do when sewing on buttons is to stick the button to the fabric with glue stick (don't worry, it washes out). Just be very careful when setting up the stitch width to make sure the needle doesn't hit the button. Turn the handwheel by hand first to make sure it is set right. Then sew slowly & carefully with the machine. Finish off with a dab of Fray Check on the back of the stitches to lock the thread.

How can I disengage the bobbin winder?

Depends on the machine. An owner's manual would probably be the best source of information.

Most older machines have the disengagement on the handwheel--on the right is the handwheel but in the center there is usually a smaller wheel that, when turned counterclockwise, disengages the needlebar and activates the bobbin winder.

I have a Bernina 707 that is hesitating to sew from time to time. I turn the handwheel and it will start running again. I cleaned and oiled not sure what else can be done. Please help??

Be sure that you are using a good quality sewing machine oil (Bernina oil for mechanicals is great). Check the manual to be sure that you have oiled every spot noted in the manual. If you need a manual, you can download one here:,d.cGU&cad=rja

The belt could be slipping and need replacement. Sometimes the problem is in the foot control when the carbon brushes are wearing down. If you are handy, you can order them online and replace them yourself.

My Janome 10000 has been sitting idle for about 6 months and I can hardly turn the hand wheel. Is there a place to oil or grease the machine to allow easier turning?

Remove the top cover (3 screws) and lubricate with good quality thin lubricant the top shaft running horizontally through the machine. This haft has 2 bushes and is a common source of seizing, especially at the handwheel end.
If this doesn't cure the problem have it serviced by a technician (there are numerous lube points inside the machine and these should be adressed every 12 - 24 months.
