All it takes is some Wheaties and elbow grease. Try placing the belt side in first with the grey or black bearing cap on. Then just kinda wedge it in making sure that both end caps are in the right position for a new belt.

Sounds like the Oreck is clogged. You'll have to undo the bag by the way of the clip in the middle at the back of the main black spindel neck and then at the bottom. Then take apart the main neck by pushing the rubber mounts upwards to release the pip fitting locks and holes. You should find that either the top of the neck or the bottom - where the dust channel feeder is located - is clogged. Either that or there may be a clog in the main dust channel after the roller brush or wedged into the fan unit itself - the Oreck XL is a dirty fan system which means clogged dirt can often get stuck between the dirt and the dirt channel.

SOURCE: Oreck belts keep coming off

If the pulley on the brush roll is worn, then I would replace the brushroll. Look at the ends where the brush roll sits in to make sure the casing hasn't over heated and not holding the brush in place. Also make sure the motor is shifting and causing the belt to come off. Another is if you are catching a rug or towel, that also will cause the belt to come off. I am assuming you using a new belt and not a worn one. After only a short time, belts stretch and need to be replaced.

That the bottom plate off, check for a clog in the inlet. If clear, then you probably have a clog in the handle tube. You will have to take the handle loose to clean it out. It may also need a new belt if you haven't changed it for a while, they stretch.

SOURCE: replace belt on my oreck xl

Either have to take the bottom plate off, or there is a small door with one screw to remove to replace the belt. Then it goes around the motor shaft and then over the pulley on the brush roll.

Why is it hard to push?

Lester,
It could be a couple of things, first, I would remove the five screws that hold your base plate on and look at your brush. At each end of the brush you have a bearing block and there are two different height settings. If you see several "hash" marks on the top of the block, it is in the new setting position and you need to rotate the block 180 degrees so that there is only one "hash" mark showing and then put the brush back on and put the belt back in place and replace the base plate and screws and then try the vacuum and see if that helps. If you only see the one "hash" mark when you take the base plate off, then you need a new brush roller. This would also be a good time to put in a new belt as well if you have not replaced in in a while. You could also have a problem pushing your vacuum if you recently replaced your carpet and you have a real thick pile. Oreck does make a high pile attachment that can be mounted on the bottom of most of their models, but you will need your model number so that you get the right one. Hope this helps!

I changed the roller brush on my Oreck XL Insight vacuum and now when I turn it on it only runs for about 5 seconds and shuts down Any ideas

Bigme03,
It sounds like you may have been given the wrong brush roller. Several models of Oreck's have a sensor in them that watches for the brush roller turning at the proper speed. The way they do this is by mounting a magnet into the brush roller and the sensor counts the number of times the magnet passes. If that magnet is not there or if the sensor does not detect the magnet passing, ie..a broken belt, it will shut the motor off. The only way you can fix it is to get the correct brush roller and put it back in. Hope this helps!

Replacing the belt for the motor

the brush roller lifts up and out. Just lift it out but your belt around the roller and belt shaft and push the brush roller back down. I own one too.

Oreck brush only turns a tiny bit and belt pulley get hot belt not turning much either

If your brush is not turning properly then you need to check the bearing ends to see if there is any hair, string, or thread wound around the brush shaft. If there is and you can remove it, that might fix your problem otherwise I would suggest getting a new brush roller.

Probably have a clog some where in the base and that is what causes it to throw stuff back out.

Roller brush not rotating

this may be the belt, and it may be the brush roller.

I am leaning more towards the belt. The belt on any vac should be changed once a year, and for the pet lovers 2 times a year.

Good luck.

I bought a replacement brushroll because the one in the vaccum cleaner is worn out.How do I go about putting the brush in the vaccum cleaner. Do I pull it out or do I have to unscrew the entire bottom...

Greetings from GoVacuum,

Make sure the vacuum is NOT plugged in. In order to replace the roller brush, you'll need to unscrew the 6 screws on the bottom plate of the vacuum cleaner. Oreck uses a Phillips Head screw, so you'll need to get a Phillips head screw driver to replace the brush.

After removing the screws from the bottom plate, simply pull up on the plate by putting your fingers into the open area where the existing brush is located. After the bottom plate has been removed you will have access to the roller brush and belt.

You can now just grab the roller brush and pull straight up on it. It's beneficial to change the belt of the vacuum when you're replacing the roller brush anyways. There is a spare belt on the actual bottom plate of all Oreck XL vacuums.

You'll notice that the new roller brush has two black square plastic caps on both sides of the roller brush. You can look on the outside of this black cap, and you'll see the words OLD and NEW. Rotate the NEW side so it's facing upwards, and the OLD side is the side that's down inside the vacuum cleaner, make sure that both sides have the NEW side facing upwards. You'll need to wrap the belt around the silver pin in the back of the vacuum on one side, and through the roller brush's metal pulley on the other side. The just stretch the belt with the brush inside of it, and place the black plastic parts back into the vacuum cleaner.

Congratulations, you've now just replaced the roller brush in your Oreck!

My Oreck has become very hard to push across carpet

IF IT PUSHED EASILY ON THE SAME CARPET BEFORE, THEN THE BRUSHROLL IS NO LONGER CONTACTING THE CARPET IT USED TO. A NEW BRUSHROLL AND/ OR BELT SHOULD GET YOU MOVING AGAIN. TRY THE BELT FIRST, MUCH CHEAPER.

IF YOU HAVE RECENTLY CHANGED THE BELT BY REMOVING THE BASEPLATE (NOT THE RECOMMENDED WAY) CHECK BASEPLATE TO MAKE SURE IT IS FLUSH WITH HOUSING.

While vacuuming it's unusually hard to push.

Hi,
I see your post is from May. I just joined Fixya this month so, id you're still looking for a solution, I would saythe belt broken or is so stretched the roller isn't spinning. Here is an link to an online guide with illustrations for changing belt. Also check the roller brushes for wear and change if necessary. Hope this helps.
