SPDIF, is just a fancy title for Digital Audio, which is linked from unit to unit in two ways only. They use either a Toslink cable(fiber optics) or a coaxial, with RCA ends. If your unit has either, it is a straight connection. Should you not have either of those, you can get a digital to analog convertor. That would be my first choice, but it may be the only one you have available. Good luck.

What is the model number of your receiver?
Many receivers don't support audio over HDMI, they just switch the signal from hdmi-in 1-4 to hdmi-out, but can't analyze the data to take audio out of it. Your receiver is probably one of those.
You need to connect the DVD player also via spdif digital cable. Look at the player to see if it has optical (square black plug) or coax (orange RCA plug) connector. Receiver probably has both of them.

When connecting hdmi out from my panasonic blue-ray player to the dvd input in my yamaha rx-v365 there is not audio or video, why?

There are several video and audio inputs named DVD. For video you have HDMI, component and composite. For audio you have standard analog stereo and digital coaxial spdif input.
You need to configure the receiver to use the correct inputs - that means HDMI and coax. Also you need to connect the BD player via coax spdif cable to the receiver, because rx-v365 doesn't support audio via HDMI. If BD player has only optical output, use DTV/CABL HDMI input and DTv/CABL Optical input on the receiver.

I plugged in my cable HDMI into my RX - V365 Yamaha reciever. and HDMI into my TV. I get video, but cannot get my attached (to reciever) speakers to play. Help

RX-V365 doesn't support HDMI audio. You need to connect the cable box also via spdif cable for audio to work. Look at the box if it uses optical spdif or coax spdif. If optical, you see that optical input on receiver is named DTV/CATV, so use also DTV HDMI for video. Coax spdif is named DVD, so in this case you will need to use DVD HDMI input.
Also you need to configure the inputs accordingly.

you will have to look at the manual, but sometimes Audio isn't transmitted on HDMI cable,( I know it makes no sense). sometimes you will have to also use the digital optical audio cable, or SPDIF coax didital cable. I had to use the Di

As for your PS3 I had simillar issue, the PS3 doesn't Automattically adjust from analog, to component, to HDMI. If you get a signal thru the Reg RCA plugs, if you plug in the HDMI cable at the same time, then go to the system settings and change the type of plug you want to use, choose the HDMI, and the screen should flicker then show the signal from the HDMI, then just power off and/or unplug the analog cables, and you are using HDMI. hope this helps, if so thanks for the ratings

Hdmi connections

Hi, If you are trying to use HDMI video, and want to give autdio input separately, that can be done in many ways. In fact I am giving HDMI video from my HTPC at DTV inoput and audio over SPDIF (optical). In the menu there is an inout select option. You need to go into DTV, then select which audio to use. You can then choose whoch input port for audio is being used with DTV.

I have issues with HDMI input as well, but those have to do with refresh rate of 60 Hz and 1080i.
