I had the same problem and got information to update the printer firmware.
Here is a link to the firmware and it fixed my problem.

Tips for a great answer:

clean the sensor first the receptive sensor is located UNDER the printhead, You can see the LED light near the bottom of this area. Tilt the printer back to see this area better.
1. Verify the latest driver and firmware is loaded. These are found at this link: http://www.fargosupport.com/
2. Calibrate both the Ribbon and Film sensors. This is done through the driver from the TOOLBOX.
