What speed are you recording at? VCR's with more than 2 heads use different heads at different speeds. Try recording at all speeds and see it that makes a diference on playback.

It's more than likely a slipping belt in the tape mechanism

If you are technically inclined it can be fixed for around $3.00

If you are not then it would be advisable to buy a new VCR because the repair cost would be more than the cost of a new one .

Connecting Hitachi VCR to my Direct TV.

Connect your Direct TV to the Ant. In connection on your VCR. When you want to watch TV, just tune the TV to channel 3 (or whatever channel the Receiver is set for). When you wish to record, set your VCR to that same channel and set your TV to the channel that your VCR outputs to. For simplicity sake, I would suggest setting both systems to channel 3 and just watching your program through the VCR. If you are still using an "off air" antenna, then connect that antenna to the ANT. IN connection on your Direct TV receiver and when you turn off the dish, it will pass the signal through just like the VCR would.

Bought a replacement remote that doesnt work......

first lets do a checking at your remote to make sure its working properly, how ? use a digital camera and point it where the LED or eye of the remote , when pointing the camera to the remote press any button of remote while watching the camera , if you see lights coming out its means remote is working .I did some searching myself at the website you purchased the remote, look like thet send you the wrong replacement. the right replacement model is MODEL: CLU436UI , not VT-RM6654a . hope this helps .
