Engine runs great, no power at head, drive shafts not broken.

The drive shaft is not seated into position properly or the shaft has broken.

Have you had the shaft off recently? If so, take the shaft off again and try to seat the shaft as you gently pull on the rope. If you need further assistance, just let me know.

Hi,
Take the attachment off and look into the end where the flex shaft fits onto your tools. The shaft should be square on the inside,if the corners are worn you will not have power to the attachment. It should cost about $35.00 to replace the flex shaft.

Engine runs fine head doesn`t spin as engine revs

if it is a bent shaft then the cable is broken in the tube
if a straight shaft then a couple of possible items
the square drives on the end of the shaft is rounded out or the clutch is not expanding as required ( same for bent shaft)

Troy-bilt tb539e head wont spin starts, and idles great but I cant get the head to spin

Since this is a split-boom machine, disassembly and inspection will be required. This unit has basically, 2 drive shafts and a clutch (up near the engine at the end of the engine's crankshaft). There is a drive shaft in the upper boom and one in the lower boom. Either the clutch or one of the drive shafts has malfunctioned. The string head SHOULD NOT spin with the engine idling. There is a centrifugal clutch that engages when the engine reaches a certain speed, in turn, it turns the upper drive shaft.
First, check the string head area for tangled string, wire, line or debris around the center shaft. Long grass can end up wrapped around that area and severely affect movement. Dissasemble the head and inspect. Make sure you can turn the string head by hand. If so, good/
To inpect lower drive shaft, just uncouple it from the upper one. Grasp the end of the driveshaft and turn it. Does it feel OK? Does the string head turn when you turn the drive? If not, you at least have a problem in the lower boom. If all is well, then proceed to inspect the upper boom.
Unscrew the main (uppper) boom from the front of the engine. If you can remove it out of the clutch drum and off then you will be able to inspect it. If the throttle cable and/or wires from the STOP switch are restricting you, you will need to remove the throttle cable from the engine's carburetor and try to get some slack in the switch wires. Those wires go to the ignition coil module under the engine cover.
When you have the upper boom off and can access the drive shaft, turn it to check it. Make sure the other end of it turns. If both drive shafts check out OK, then the clutch will need to be inspected. Post back if needed.

remove the head from the shaft( tube) and remove the broken drive cable
get and fit new cable and then reattach the head to the shaft ( tube )
the gears in the head are fairly robust but the drive is a cable which twists up and pulls out of the drive squares at either end

Drive shaft not engaging

Hi there Reyles,

On this model, if yo rev the engine and the head just sits there, it can be one of two things.
  1. Clutch not engaging (unlikely)
  2. Broken flex shaft (likely)
You need to partially disassemble the unit to find out. I believe you will need a T25 or T27 torx head. Remove the screws from the clutch housing that connects the engine to the shaft.

Pull it apart. Spin the shaft manually. If nothing its the shaft. Otherwise its the clutch.

Best regards
Mike

Maybe, but it sounds as though the clutch may be the problem. If you can get it to run properly except for the turning of the head, check the clutch. If it is just not running with high enough RPM's, the problem may be the engine. I would check the clutch...I may be wrong and it may be the shaft. That would be an easy fix...Lee

Craftsman gas weedeater. Engine runs, but the head won't run

Cut 1/8" off outer (aluminum) shaft. Lube inner shaft with STP or heavy gear lube this will re-engage worn square drive .Replacing inner cable is un-necessary this is normal wear. Sears Master Tech BB
