Question about Intex Automatic Salt Water System for Above Ground Saltwater Pool

NO CHLORINE Our new Intex Chlorinator isn't producing chlorine. The salt is dissolving properly and we are running it for the amount of time in the instructions, but no chlorine. We now have cloudy water, any help would be appreciated.

I just went through this
Are you using the instructions in the manual for locking the system after setting the number of hours?
If you are, they are not right
unlock the system, set your hours then press and hold the down arrow until it beeps and then press and hold the up arrow until it beeps, the system is now locked and in about 10 minutes the chlorine light will come on. Our pool went green and now that we have it running right the colour is changing before our eyes. Changed the filter and washed it out several times.

If you do not have any errors showing on the screen then you made need to do one of many things. Cloudy water can be caused by many things. My last problem was that the bacteria was so small that even after shocking the pool the debris was so small the filter could not trap it. so I had to add a coagulating agent in that would in that bind all the small particles so they coul dbe trapped in the filter. read this site,,

If you can remove your generator try and bench test it. Fill with pool water and do a chlorine test. Run the generator for a few minutes, unit should produce bubbles when the cells are turned on. Run another chlorine test and make sure it is higher than original test. You should also test your combined chlorines to make sure you don't have excess chloramines in the water. Also check for any buildup on the generator plates which should be acid washed, and verify salt concentration.

Can i put salt instead of sand in my pump

No you cannot. Sand is used in a sand filter to filter the water to remove dirt. Salt is dissolved in the pool water and a salt water chlorinator produces chlorine using the salt.

If you have an Circular Metal Frame pool, should be around 6400 gallons, then the initial salt add should be approximately 160lbs...

Make sure you only run the pump for 24 hrs to properly dissolve the salt, then you can set your chlorinator to desired time... Start high and work your way down... 10 hrs pump and 8 hrs chlorinate...
Check your chlorine level after the first two days and see if it starts to climb above 3ppm, if it does, lower your cycle time until you can maintain the 3ppm level...Hope this helps you?

How much salt do you put in a 22,000gal. pool?

WOW... You have a huge above ground pool! Are you planning to use the Intex chlorinator to chlorinate your 22,000 gallon pool??? If you are, take a look at the max gallon rating and how long you may need to run... Here's a chart that should help you determine how much salt to add... After adding the salt, run the pump for 24 hrs without the chlorinator to properly dissolve the salt... Don't be surprised if you need to add above 500 lbs!!!
Good luck and hope this works for you...

Ok i have the intex 1600gph sand filter saltwater combo system and my pool hold 8000 gallons i can run the chlorinator 24 hrs a day and it will not get the chlorine and free chlorine above 1 the ph is 7.5...

Yes, what is your stabilizer level? It should be between 30 and 50 ppm. If the stabilizer is too low then the sun will cause the chlorine to dissipate faster than the chlorinator can produce it. Some salt chlorinator manufactures recommend 80ppm but that reduces the chlorine efffect. If you can't get the chlorinator working then using a floating tablet chlorinator is a good option to keep the pool open. I hope this helps.

Intex salt water chlorinator I added a higher flow pump and chlorine levels seem low no matter how many hours I run the chlorinator

your pump has nothing to do with chlorine generation.
You need to get a salt test kit that reads in #'s not colors.
Now get your salt to 3000ppm or as close to it as you can.
The amount of salt reccomended in the manual is just a starting point
any lower than 2800 and you will not produce enough sanitizer and over 3600 and your pool can go cloudy, taste bad, and rust metal parts

No chlorine being produced

although you are close to the amount of salt that is recommended all pools are just different enough that the salt table is just a starting point if you do not have enough salt it is still possible to not trigger the alarm but not produce enough chlorine.
Start by getting a salt test strip kit and get your pool to 3000ppm this may take a day or so since you really need to filter and circulate the pool for 24 hours in between adding salt
Once you get the salt right then move on to generating

also do not worry about total chlorine you just need to concentrate on free chlorine this is the amount available in the pool to do it's job and dont forget to ad a stabilizer to help hold the chlorine level on hot sunny days

No warning code, green light on but no chlorine produced???????

make sure your ppm is at least 3000 low salt may not trigger an alarm but is not sufficient for generating chlorine

also make sure you are running the generator for at least 4-6 hours to give the chlorine time to register

the system itself blows out very minute amounts of chlorine but build up after hours of being on

My chlorine generater appears to be working fine but the test strips show no chlorine in the pool. I have an 18 x 48 Easy Set and added 135 lbs of salt and ran the filter for 4 hours. This is the first it...

no chemicals needed -Test strip are not as accurate as liquid kits buy one for about 10 dollars
Also since it is a new set up you shouls run the chlorine generator for at least 8 hours.
Make sure your chlorine light comes on ( about 5 minutes sometimes a little longer after you set the timer)

Also get a test kit to detect salt 10 dollars for 10 tests Keep it as close to 3000ppm as you can the higher you go past this amount the saltier the water can taste

do not go below 2500 you do not want to have to be bothered adding salt for splash out or rain.

starting at 3000ppm gives you a long time before needing to add for the splash out or rain with these factors you only loose about 25-35ppm's when refilling and so on so it is a long way to 2500

One other pointer is to make sure you filter your pool enough. It is recommended to turn your pool water over at least 3 times a day
as an example I will use my 7000gallon pool with my 2000gl pump thats about 10 hours a day just for filtering. This does not include how long you need to leave the generator on to produce the amount of chlorine to produce a 1.0 or a 1.5 setting Also keep in mind that chlorine affects the ph so chlorine needs sel first before you worry about ph so once both are set then watch as the chlorine drops so will ph but once you run the generator to rebuild the chlorine level the ph will come up by itself. Ph will cause more problems with eye irritation and cloudy water than chlorine

No chlorine reading

Salt is sodium chloride, you can only measure salt levels now as your CL (cloride) is bound to a NA (sodium). Table salt =NACL, Your Intex system will tell you if your salt level is too high or too low but your old test equipment for free chlorine will continue to tell you no chlorine as it can't react with the chloride any longer as it is bound to the salt. That is why they tell you you never have to add more because the salt stabilizes it. Your chlorine is there it's bound to the salt. Use the pool it's fine and it makes your water feel really soft! Just keep the salt level right and your fine> It's confusing as they call the unit a chlorine generator! I had the same issue, called Intex and they told me the above.
