Question about Whirlpool Calypso GVW9959K Top Load Washer

1 Answer

My clothes gets stuck between and under the calypso. Is there an adjustment to the calypso, so that this does not happen. Also the washer makes noise that sounds like the calypso. Could the calypso be loose, plus causing the clothes to be stuck? How do I adjust this, or fix this?

Hi

replacing the nunater (wash plate) may help. Especially, if the rubber around the edge is starting to crack or curl, creating areas where clothing can catch. This is a known problem with the Calypso. As I was instructed, the problem was attributed to an excessive nunator time at the end of the wash cycle. Such a vacuum was being generated that it was pulling clothing into the edges of the nunator, leaving rubber marks and/or clothes becoming lodged.
OR
First, make sure that you are not overloading the washer. This will cause garments to be caught and trapped underneath the washplate.
In this washer, small items are recommended to be washed inside a mesh garment bag.Check the seal around the outside of the washplate. Look for damage or gaps in the seal. If you find damage to this seal, the wash plate will need to be replaced. To replace this wash plate:

  • Disconnect power by unplugging the washer.
  • You will need to use a putty knife to get the main top hinged open like the hood on a car. Insert the putty knife between the gap of the main top and the front panel 6 inches inward from the right corner. Push in on the metal clip to release the hinged top. Repeat the process to release the left side clip. After both sides are released, the top will flip backward on it's hinges. Rest it against the wall behind the washer.
  • Next, release the catches on the sides of the white tub cover ring. There should be 7 catches around the tub ring. You will see a black hose attached to the left rear of the tub ring. You can leave this hose attached as you move the tub ring off to the side and out of the way.
  • Now you will need to pull off the gray balance ring on top of the tub. There are 3 catches that need to be released around the top of the tub. After releasing the catches, pull the balance ring off and set it aside.
  • The dome on top of the wash plate is pried off using the notch on one side. A large flat tip screwdriver can be inserted into this notch to pry the washplate dome off.
  • Then you will see 6 bolts holding the washplate to the universal joint assembly. Remove the 6 bolts. Remove the washplate.
  • Reverse the procedure to reassemble.
You may have a worn out universal joint assembly. This will cause the washplate to tilt at an abnormal angle when nutating. Garments will also get stuck under the washplate if this problem is occurring.
To check for this problem, push down on the outside of the wash plate in several places. This will cause the wash plate to tilt to it's maximum position. Check for gaps between the wash plate and tub. If you find gaps, this is probably causing your problem.
Replacing the universal joint in this washer is a complicated procedure. You will need a technician to complete this repair. (Note: Replacing the washplate is recommended when replacing the universal joint.)

Replacing the OUTER WASH PLATE may fix your problem. The outer plastic 'seal' or rim of the washplate should be touching the inner surface of the stainless steel wash basket. So it catches clothes. I just installed a u-joint kit today, so needless to say, I got out the washplate and retrieved my clothes on the way to replacing the u-joint. It involves leaning up the upper lid and cover, removing the tub ring and balance ring and the dome. Then there are 6 bolts to remove the outer wash plate to get to your clothes underneath. Might as well replace the washplate while you are at it. to download the manual, copy this https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/2c1e295a88aaaae885256c5d004632a4/$FILE/8178010.pdf
into your internet explorer address line and save the manual. page 36 starts the instructions.

Whirlpool Calypso stops at 26 minutes and throws ob code

The OB indicates and out of balance condition has been detected by the motor control. You say this happens when the washer is empty also. One thing about the OB error is that the lid must be opened to clear the error and allow the washer to advance to the next part of the cycle. If the lid is not opened to adjust the clothes then the OB error will happen again.

If the OB error was cleared and the OB occurs with an empty load then the motor control has failed.

The drain pump must work. The image below shows how to run a diagnostic test to check the drain pump. Follow the instructions in the image below and check the drain pump operation. If the pump runs and the water does not drain then the sump is clogged. If the pump hums but does not run then the pump needs to be replaced.

first you need to clean your washer
run the washer with no clothes; add 1 cup vinegar, that will cut the soap residue from the hoses do this on hot wash hot rinse

then when you wash your next load of clothes; fill the tub about 1/4 full, add the soap, turn the agitator to disolve the soap, then add the clothes

this problem happens also if you are using too much soap or a heavy duty soap such as Tide.

Whirlpool Calypso once wash cycle is selected. The machine will fill then stop and there will be a humming noise

does it wash or spin anywhere on the dial.  If not, the coupling that connects the motor to the transmission is defective and need replacing.  A $20 part

Stops in the middle of rinsing...leaves some water at bottom-

Calypso...The pumps fail often. They have redisigned one that theres not as many problems with, but if you still have the original, this is deffinatly the problem. As far as clothes getting stuck, the U-Joints wear out and cause too much play allowing things to get stuck. Total for this repair parts + labor will usually run about 500-600. There was a class action lawsuit for this machine and they no longer make it.

Rubbing and Clicking Noise in Dryer.

It's noisy Most noises from a washing machine occur during the spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping during the spin, the load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it. Repeat these steps if necessary.

A common problem with noises from washing machines has been the under wire that may come out of small clothes. In the washer they can get stuck in one of the inner basket holes and make a scrapping noise, they can actually make there way into the pump and jam the pump, or make a terrible noise when the pump is running. Grab a flash light and have a peek inside the washer for this. Front load washers seem very common to this happen! If the tiny cloth  is showing signs of fraying, may be best not to wash it in the washing machine, replace the cloth

Have you checked the agitator? There may be sharp edges on the agitator blades. OR the towels may be getting stuck under the agitator and tub bottom. The agitator is supposed to suck the clothing down in the center and forcibly throw the clothing outwards against the tub. The cycle then repeats.
