Engine backfires when running
A backfire typically results from improper air to fuel ratio. An overly lean air-fuel mixture (i.e. an overabundance of air) can lead to a failure to ignite in the combustion chamber, also called a "misfire". The unburnt fuel then enters the exhaust system, where hot components can cause the fuel to ignite unpredictably. Alternatively, rich air-fuel mixtures (i.e. an overabundance of fuel) can result in incomplete combustion, again causing unburnt fuel to enter the exhaust system.

i would also check fuel flow. pull the gas line from the carb and see if gas flows out at a good rate (into a metal can of course) or if it trickles out. if the latter, then gas tank either has junk at the bottom preventing the gas from flowing or the vent hole (usually on the gas cap) is plugged.
i have also had my carb float bowl rust out on me, but that took 10 years.

You have a bad antibackfire valve. It is located on carburator below the fuel bowl. You can replace it, or as I advise others, install an inline shutoff valve. Turn the fuel valve on to start it, then turn it off when you shut the engine down.

I have a Scotts _ John Deere law mower tractor model S2048-S2554 Serial number 020-001, the engine runs but sounds like it is going to die or it needs air --- it runs unnevenly

Most likely it is the governor spring but you could have a stiff throttle shaft or a needle that is not closing properly allowing the carb to flow too much fuel into the engine.
