Unfortunately your battery is probably shot. First though, try to run
the battery down until the laptop dies. Now with the discharged battery,
and the laptop powered off, plug it in and leave it off for a few
hours. Power the laptop back on and check the charge level. Still at
30%? Then the battery is very likely just bad. Unfortunately, the cells in the battery just simply die for a number of reasons, and capacity is lost. This is why most manufactures will only warranty a battery for 1 year.
Take the battery out and write down the model number and the "MAh" or "Ah" number. The MAh number represents the capacity of the battery. The higher this number, the generally longer the laptop runs on battery. Go to http://gateway.shopbysystem.com/gateway-m-7301u-notebook-accessories.html and verify that this is your laptop model. This is a Gateway authorized reseller. Looks like they want $90 for a small battery. Take your battery model number and go to Amazon and look up the battery there. Make sure it's MAh number matches or exceeds what is on your battery. Usually you can get a replacement battery from Amazon for about $20 less than Gateway.
Usually this just means it is time for a battery replacement. They will last 1-3 years depending on how you use and charge them. Here are a few things to try to make sure it is the battery.
Some laptops will run without the battery installed so you can check this out by a few simple tests. Take the battery out and try turning on the laptop if it runs then you know its not the laptop or the power supply. If it is one of those laptops that wants the battery in then you need to check the power supply with a volt meter. Normally its not the power supply so if you can't do this don't worry.
Next look at the battery and if it has a reset button on it. Laptop battery's have a little micro controller that sometimes needs to be reset to operate normally. If it does reset it and try charging. If it doesn't have one don't worry.
The last thing we can try is try charging the battery then unplug the power supply while running. If the laptop just dies within a few seconds or minutes then your battery is definitely the problem.
Usually you will notice that the battery is getting warmer and the time it will run on the battery is shorter and shorter until it just won't run at all on the battery. Check around for a replacement battery, don't just get the first one. Just had one customer last week have this problem and they were told $160 and a week to get one in, checked another place and it was $84 and overnight. So it pays to shop around for these.
it may need to be left on charge for a while...
when u first boot by pressing power wait for a minute or so and press and hold power button til shut down then try reboot..also try boot from disk....need to distinguish whether motherboard or software issue.
Gateway laptop is really ****.
I bought Gateway MX8711 in March 2007, after 6 months i use it...the hard disk failed.
Gateway replaced a new Hitachi hard disk for me but not more than 8 months and it failed again.
Gateway told me that i have no more warranty because the repair warranty is only 90 days.
I bought this laptop and use it not more than 2 years, the hard disk was failed twice.
Usually Hard disk manufacturer provided 3 years warranty for the hard disk. The manufacturer year of the hard disk is May 2007....they should able to help because the har disk not more than a year being used...but they don't. This is really bad customer service and not fair to the buyer.
I will not buy any Gateway products anymore....i swear.
