Very old thread but I had this problem, the little light beam sensor had fallen off.
Its secured onto the back of the thin plastic top plate. With a torx t10 bit you can lift this plate up and clip the sensor back into position. Theres 2 screws on the front and 6 along the back, some are difficult to get to but I just took a few out and bent the plate up a bit. I blobbed a little bit of glue on while I was there to discourage it from coming off again

I would lift the top up...and on the back left corner is a slot that the tab from the lid goes into to say the top is closed, I would stick a piece of paper of cardboard in the grove, or slot and see if that works..I think it is a light beam type switch, and not a mechanical switch that telsl the printer the lid is down..so you basically blocking light when cardboard is in that slot...

Why can't I scan, print or do anything? There is no error code.

Patti, you may have to do a hard reset.
1) Disconnect the USB cable from your computer
2) Remove the ink cartridges
3) Unplug the power cord. Wait for a couple minutes. Plug the unit back in,hit power button if needed.
4) Wait for the "Insert Cartridges" message, reinstall the cartridges
5) Close printers doors
6) If you get a recalibration message, allow the printer to complete this task
7) Reconnect printer to USB cable
8) Try your printing again.
Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

HP 6500 ALL IN ONE DISPLAYS ERROR ON SWITCH ON Ox61011BED

Hi Norman,

The Error message usually relates to Printer Failure. However you can try few steps to fix it. ( Hopefully )

Turn off the Printer.

1. Open the Carriage access door.
2. Remove the Cartridges and Printhead ( Printhead is the part on which you install the cartridges )
3. Lift the latch to remove the Printhead.
4. Move the carriage from left to right 6 times and it should move freely
5. Clean the contacts on the printhead with lint free cloth. ( Golden dots at back of Printhead )
6. Turn on the printer and it should say " Printhead missing or not installed/Damaged "
7. Install the Printhead and Cartridges and close the latch and close the Carriage door
8. the printer should go through alignment process

If this step does not fix, You may try calling HP customer support to check for better options/solutions

Printer preparation please wait error message on HP 6500 printer

This problem happens when the cartridges are not properly aligned. With the printer turned on, open the cartridge access door. The carriage will move and then stop. Now uninstall the cartridges from the holder. Clean the electrical contacts on the holder and then reinstall the cartridges. Make sure the cartridges are perfectly placed into the holder. Close the cartridge access door. Turn off the printer and now turn it on. Check if the printer says Aligning cartridges. If this is not working, then hard reset your printer. With your printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet. Wait for a few minutes and reconnect the power cord. The printer should turn on automatically. If it does not, then press and hold the power button to turn it on. Resetting the printer will fix most issues dealt with the printer.

Is there a diagram as to how to change ink cartridges?

There is a demo available that shows you how to do this. Open the print cartridge access door, then replace the ink cartridges. The demo is here:

http://h71016.www7.hp.com/html/interactive/6500/model.html?eAssets=1

After the intro click on Product Views, then click on Supplies View, then Print-Carriage Access Door, and finally click on Ink Cartridges.

Hope this helps,

General printer error pops up 0x61011bec on the hp photosmart premium C309 series. need to know how i can fix it. not very electronically capable.

I had the same issue and I ended up solving it by opening the top door for about 30 seconds to look at the ink and it started initializing the printer... since that's more lucky than good, I also found hp's support page for this error.
Here it is.
Solution one: Reset the product
  1. Without turning off the product, disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
NOTE: The USB cable connects to the port on the back of the product. The port is labeled with the USB icon (c01424575.gif ). Figure 2: Example USB connection (your product might not look exactly the same as this example)c01651067.gif
  2. Remove the cartridges from the product.
  3. Wait for the 'Insert Cartridges ' message to display on the control panel.
  4. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
  5. Wait 60 seconds.
  6. Reconnect the power cord. If the product does not automatically turn on, press the Power button (c01602202.gif ).
  7. Reinsert the cartridges, and then close any open doors on the product.
  8. If you receive a prompt to print a calibration page, do so.
  9. Reconnect the USB cable to the rear of the product, and then try printing again.
Solution two: Service the product If you have completed all the steps listed above and are still experiencing a problem, service the product.

If this doesn't work you can get to other hp support by going to www.hp.com, then clicking on 'Support & Troubleshooting' at the bottom right of the page. Next, type in what type of printer you have in the 'Support for your products bar:' and select 'See support and troubleshooting information,' then click '>>.' I went to 'Solve a Problem' to find out what to do with the error message, but you might find some help in the 'Getting Started' section too, which is right next to 'Solve a Problem.'

Hope this helps!
