Electric garage door does not always close

It is a chamberlain brand. Sometimes it won't close. I had a technician out and he said the motor was good. Almost always will open, but, won't close unless I hold the button down.

Check the alignment of the photo cells. If they are out of alignment, even a little bit it will behave like you describe.

SOURCE: Garage door won't close unless

WHEN HOLDING IT DOWN MAKES THE DOOR CLOSE PROPERLY THE PROBLEM IS IN THE SAFETY EYES.

CHECK FOR A LOOSE OR BROKEN WIRE.

ARE THE EYES WIRED CORRECTLY?

ARE THEY AIMED AT EACH HOLDING DOWN THE WALL BUTTON OVERRIDES THE SAFETY EYES.

Garage door won't go down all the way and then reverses to open

Check that the wheels and bearings are turning freely and that the door is not cocking to one side when closing. If the wheels are catching because of bad bearings, because the tracks are out of true or because the door is not staying straight in the tracks, the motor thinks that the door is hitting a car or a person and reverses. One thing to try: disengage the motor and try moving the door through the full traverse. Most automatic doors have a pull-cord that disengages the door from the motor. CAUTION: You may need a friend to help with the door, because it could be surprisingly heavy,.

Remove the cover and check the drive gear. It is a white nylon gear just in front of the motor. It will be obvious if it is bad. Tell me - if it won't open how do you know it won't close?

Garage door opened fine but now when I try to close it, all I hear is a buzzing sound for 3 sec., light comes on but door won't go down.

Your trolley may be jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. If so, loosen the chain enough to relieve the strain on the chain and then run the opener until the door is closed. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit' control on the side of the motor unit. Turn this control 2 full turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

It sounds like the door is closing just a little too far. It hits the garage floor and the safety reverses it to the open position. This can be intermittent. On the side of the motor unit you will find the 'down limit' adjustment. Turn this just a tad in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Some tweaking may be necessary to get it just right.

The motor has a thermal protector that will cause the motor to quit when it gets hot. If you let it cool off it will automatically reset and should work again.
