Troubleshooting Laptop WiFi Connectivity Issues

Most laptop manufacturers provide an external switch to switch on/off the WiFi functionality. As a result, the first problem most new laptop owners encounter with trying to connect to a wireless network is that their WiFi has inadvertently been switched off. So, if you have a WiFi connectivity issue, the first thing to make sure of is that your laptop's WiFi external switch is on.

The next most common problem when it comes to WiFi connectivity issues is that the signal strength is too weak to hold a connection. This can be extremely confusing if the network is working fine for a person sitting at the next table. This could be due to several reasons. This person's laptop might have a more sensitive WiFi receiver, be set in just the right location where the signal strength is maximum, or even be accessing a different WiFi network other than the one you are trying to connect to. When you're troubleshooting a wireless connection, make sure to get as close to the router as you can, certainly in the same room if it's in your own home, so you can eliminate signal strength as a possible issue.

In order to prevent every stranger who walks by from accessing any network with WiFi capability, there are a number of security options that can be set on WiFi routers. The most common of these is simply enabling password protection, so that any laptop trying to connect to the network will have to provide a password for the initial connection (after that the operating system remembers the password). In order that you be able to connect to a WiFi network, you will have to set up your laptop's WiFi connection with the correct key. First, try the key printed on the router label, but if a custom password was created when the network was set up, you'll either have to find the piece of paper where it was written or chase the person who set up the network. If the password absolutely can't be recovered, search the Internet for how to reset the router (varies with brand), create a new password and enter it on all the computers that use the connection.

In some cases, it's easy to reset the password or turn the security on and off by connecting directly to the router with an Ethernet cable and typing the fixed IP address for the router into your browser.

Connecting directly by cable to the router is an important troubleshooting step for wireless connectivity even if you don't have a password problem. If you can't connect to the Internet even after plugging directly into the router, neither the wireless adapter in your laptop nor the wireless transceiver in the router are at fault.

If you plug directly into the router via the Ethernet cable and you gain access to the Internet, you can continue troubleshooting wireless issues. Check Device Manager to see if it's complaining about the network hardware. If not, and you still can't gain access at this point, the problem is either with the high speed modem and ISP, or a networking software issue within the operating system.

High speed modems, often called routers if they include a built-in router, are equipped with a series of status LEDs that can be used to diagnose many connectivity problems. Whether you have a cable modem connecting to the cable company, DSL via the phone company or one of the more esoteric high speed modems, they should always include an LED that tells you if the connection between the modem and the Internet has been established. If this link light is out, or has changed colors, say from the familiar green to an ominous red, power down the modem and turn it back on again. This hard reset will usually fix dropped connection problems caused by storms, power surges or signal interruptions, providing the modem hasn't been damaged. A modem/router will also include a status LED to show whether an Ethernet cable connection to your laptop is good, and your laptop will have a little status/activity LED for the network connection as well. While color coding isn't universal, solid green usually indicates a good connection, and blinking green or orange usually indicates activity. Some modems include an LED to tell you if the DSL or cable link to the ISP is good even when the Internet isn't functioning.

Operating system issues affecting connectivity can include firewall (security software) settings that prevent your computer from establishing communications with the Internet Service Provider (ISP), or the failure to install the software that ISP requires. Unfortunately, there are also more complicated problems that will require drawn out conversations with the ISP's technical support department to troubleshoot.

If you're adventurous, or desperate, you'll find all sorts of third party software online that will reset the Windows stack or change registry settings back to defaults, but you're better off trying the tech support route first if a software glitch is at the bottom of your problems.

What Type/Brand of router ?????

Apple's iPhone is a multimedia connectivity tool.
As such, the iPhone employs a sophisticated system to keep you connected to the web via WiFi signals so that you can stay up to date with email, mapping and media.
To use the iPhone's WiFi feature just follow these steps.
Tap a network.
If you have not yet used your iPhone's WiFi or if you're in a new WiFi area, the iPhone will show you a list of available networks.
Tap the network that you want to connect to in order to connect.
If there is a password required a little lock icon appears.
Enter the password to connect to locked networks and continue to surf the web.
Monitor your signal.
As you use your iPhone, especially if you're moving around, you should take a look at the signal strength of the connection.
The strength is indicated by a small, black broadcast symbol that stacks arches, or rounded bars, on top of one another.
The more bars there are the better the signal.

Make connecting to WiFi automatic or manual.
The iPhone is equipped to automatically search for available networks and connect you to one.
If you do not want the phone to search for networks, select the "WiFi" option on the phone's menu.
Then select either the on or off option of the "Ask To Join Networks."
Turning this option off requires that you find networks manually.

Forget a network.
Once you connect to a WiFi network once the iPhone automatically remembers the network and connects you to it at a later opportunity.
To forget a network so you don't get automatically connected choose the "WiFi" option on the menu.
Then tap the right arrow button next to one of the networks that the iPhone already remembers. Then tap "Forget This Network" to erase the phone's memory of the network.

Troubleshoot Wi-Fi Connection Problems on an iPhone
If you experience Wi-Fi connectivity issues on your iPhone, you may need to reset the Wi-Fi connection.
Your connectivity issues could be caused by the wrong password if you are having trouble logging into the Wi-Fi network or from a problem in your iPhone's settings.
By resetting the Wi-Fi connection, you are clearing out the previous settings created when you first connected to the network.

Tap the Settings icon on the iPhone's home screen, and tap the Wi-Fi tab.
Swipe the switch on the Wi-Fi tab to ensure Wi-Fi is enabled on your iPhone.
Tap the blue arrow button on the network tab you are connected to in the network list, and tap "Forget this Network."
Tap the "Forget Network" button that appears on the pop-up menu to confirm the action.

Tap the Wi-Fi Networks tab in the upper-left corner to return to the previous screen, and tap the network's tab in the network list to re-join it.
Press the Home button on the iPhone, and tap the Safari icon on the home screen to test the Wi-Fi connection.
Tap the blue arrow icon on the network's tab if the connectivity problem persists, and tap the "Renew Lease" button at the bottom of the network's window.
Tap the "Renew Lease" button on the pop-up box to confirm the action.
Tap the Home button on the iPhone, and tap the Safari icon on the home screen to test the network connection.

Unable to connect my blackberry to wifi. it says unable to authenticate network.

Try a hard reset: With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot 5 minutes.

Also check the wifi encryption is compatible with your phone?
Maybe an option to goto a cafe with a wifi hotspot and try logging in there ... does that work?
cheers.

My iphones and tablet are unable to join on my belkin wi fi why

Go ahead and do some investigating. Does connecting via wired LAN brings any results? Could it be that you're having 2.4GHz interference? Try switching your WiFi channel or moving your router away from large metal objects. If that doesn't work try connecting to your wireless network holding a device close to the antenna, inches away. Does this work? If so, your antenna or WiFi signal amplifier circuit could be dead. You can open your router up and do some further investigating with a multimeter, but if you suspect a hardware failure, it's probably best to not bother opening it up and checking up on your warranty options. Even if that doesn't work out, it's not like routers are super expensive these days.

Unable to communicate thru WiFi to print

A solid green Wi-Fi light indicates that it is connected to a wireless network. An orange light indicates that it is not connected to a network.
Another way to determine if your printer is connected to your network is to print the wireless network setup page. From the printer operator panel, press the Setup button (wrench icon) > Network Setup > Print Setup Page. Your printer will then print the network settings. Check the SSID, signal strength, or trouble code.
A quick fix to this problem (especially if your printer was working fine before with your wireless network) can be achieved by resetting the printer and/or rebooting the PC.

How to change channels.

As long as the router isn't faulty? You may find that something is interfering with the signal, other radio units, Phones, other WiFi devices can "Swamp" the receiver, The fact that even right beside it still isn't any good, & unless you can "up" the power level, (sometimes you can, check your manual) Then I am of the opinion that it is faulty. Ensure you have the latest driver for your PC's WiFi. too.
