Install the software first and then you will be able to scan its just that the scan options are not getting detected from the software on the computer that assigns the scanning options.

IF the software is installed then open hp solution centre and point to settings. Then point to scan settings and click on scan to setup and move all the items on the left to the right by selecting each one and pressing the right arrow button and click on ok and now check you will be able to scan

How do I scan from j4680 to computer to email? Device says "no scan option" and refers me to non-existent product documentation

What OS do you have? Did you install the HP drivers or a generic driver from the OS? The generic driver only runs the printer features of the all-in-one.

If you need the drivers or full software see: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3692888& . Select your OS and then click Next. On the next page expand the section labeled drivers. If you have the generic driver installed, uninstall the all-in-one and then remove the data cable (USB). Reboot and then install the HP software. Diagnost tools are available from the above site as well.

Next make sure that the cable is good and the unit is directly connected to the computer by a cable that is 6' or less in length. Scanning requires bi-directional communication and can fail when the printer works. (Replacing the cable is a simple thing to try.)

If you have the full HP software installed, you need to set up the destination buttons in the software before the buttons on the unit will work. Scan from the Solution Center on your computer a few times to find the best defaults to include in the settings. Click Settings then Scan Settings. In the section Scan To Setup, Add destinations the click Update the Device. The scan buttons on the unit will not work and launch the Solution Center unless the full software is installed and a monitoring program is running on the computer. See http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c02450835&tmp_task=solveCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3692888#N81 to set up the program for your OS.

If you have the basic driver installed, you can scan from the computer. Windows XP, Vista and 7 have built-in programs that can acquire scans. Paint is on all three systems (File > Import from Camera or Scanner > New Scan). Windows Vista and 7 add Windows Fax and Scan (New Scan). Vista includes Photo Gallery (it is available as an optional download for XP or 7).

I hope this helps.

How do I scan with this thing?

What OS do you have installed? Did you install the full-featured software or the Canon drivers? These are available here: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp780#DriversAndSoftware . If you installed a generic driver from the OS, uninstall it and unplug the data cable (USB) before installing the Canon drivers. (The OS driver will work for the printer but not the scanner.) Next place the document face down on the glass or face up if you have a automatic document feeder.

Always do the first few scans from the computer. (The full software will hear the scanner buttons but you need a few things first. There are scan icons in the software that need to be programmed for the destinations and default locations. The monitoring program also must be running before the scan buttons on the all-in-one will work.) Launch the MP Navigator (double-click on the icon or from the Start Menu) and then the black & white or color scan. Set your resolution and contrast. Adjust these as needed and then Scan and OK. (You can do preview scans and then press an on-screen Scan button.) For more information see the documentation at the Canon site: http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/printers_multifunction/pixma_mp_series/pixma_mp780#BrochuresAndManuals . Remember the settings that give good results; you can use these settings to help you set the destinations and defaults for the scan buttons.

If you have Windows XP or later, you can scan without the MP Navigator in Paint (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Paint). Then choose File > Import from Camera or Scanner. In Vista and Win7, there is also Windows Fax and Scan that can acquire scans (New Scan). Vista also includes Photo Gallery with a similar feature; the program is available for Win7 in the Microsoft Live package.

I hope this helps.

A full feature software and driver package for Windows 7 is not available for your product. However, the Windows 7 operating system installed on your computer contains a basic driver solution for your product. With the basic driver, some of the advanced product features are not available. You can print from a software program, and import and view images on a memory card, if your product has a memory card slot. With this basic driver, the buttons on the product do not function and some of the advanced product features are not available. How to Scan a Document in Windows 7 By Greg Harvey The Windows Fax and Scan utility enables you to scan documents and pictures. Before you can scan documents and pictures, you must have a scanner installed on your computer. Your scanner must be listed in the Devices section of the Devices and Printers Control Panel window.

To check to see if your scanner is properly installed, open the Device Stage. Choose Start?Devices and Printers. If Windows doesn't automatically find your scanner, you can manually add it in the Devices and Printers window by clicking the Add a Device button in the toolbar and following the wizard's commands.

  1. Choose Start?All Programs?Windows Fax and Scan.

Windows 7 opens the Windows Fax and Scan window.

  2. Click the Scan button in the Navigation pane, then click the New Scan button on the toolbar.

The New Scan dialog box for your scanner opens.

  3. Use the settings on the right to describe your scan.

By letting the computer know what you're scanning, its color profile, and the type of file you plan to create, you enable Windows Fax and Scan to create the highest quality scan.

  4. Click the Preview button to see what your document will look like.

    Make any last minute changes.

  5. If you're happy with the preview, click the Scan button.

Windows scans the document and presents you with an image of your document.

  6. Click the Save As button and complete the necessary information.

Enter the filename, the type of graphics file you want saved, and then click the Save button.

To automatically forward the document you've just scanned as an attachment to a new fax message, click the Forward as Fax button.

The scan feature in the Windows Fax and Scan utility is set primarily to scan text documents. If you want to scan a photograph or other graphic, you're better off doing that directly within the Windows Live Photo Gallery.

I DONT KNOW HOW THE SCANNER WORKS.WHERE TO INSERT THE PICTURE I WANT TO SCAN.

Which device do you have? If it is an all-in-one that does not have an automatic document feeder (ADF), you lift up the scanner cover and place your photo face down on the glass. If there is an ADF, place the document face up in the feeder. (Using the ADF is not recommended for pictures.)

If it is a stand-alone scanner, the cover is more obvious. For single-sheet scanners, check the manual for which side of the document needs to be forward.

Depending on the OS and software installed, you launch your scan program and adjust the resolution and destination and press scan. (If you have an all-in-one, you may need to install the manufacturer's full-featured software first. Otherwise you will only get printing enabled.) If you use a generic OS driver, the buttons on the unit will not trigger the computer responding to the commands.

Set the destinations for scanner buttons in the software before using the unit buttons when using the full-featured software. Check the manual for specific information. The button presses are noticed by a monitoring program. If that isn't running the unit buttons will not work.

I hope this helps.

(Windows XP, Vista and Win7 all accept scans in Paint (File > Import from Camera or Scanner > New Scan). Vista and Win7 also have Windows Fax and Scan that can acquire scans.)

How do I use my scanning feature? I need step by step instructions to get a scanning job down. Where do I find the instructions?

Are you using the full-featured software or the generic driver in the OS? The generic drivers often only run the printer. The full software must be installed before the USB cable is connected to the all-in-one. If you have the generic driver, uninstall it first.

HP has many help files on scanning (depending on your OS and set-up)
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/documentSubCategory?tmp_rule=23133&tmp_task=useCategory&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=1153481

Basically, put the document face down on the glass (or face up in a document feeder) If the full-featured software is installed, start the HP Solution Center (Start > All Programs > HP (folder) > HP Solution Center (slightly different for Macs) or double-click on the icon for the program on the desktop.). Click on the Scan Photo or Scan Document icon in the software and set the resolution and other settings when the pop-up comes up. Set up the destination (Scan to, File Type, etc) Then click Scan. If you get a preview scan, you can make adjustments and then Scan.

If you have the Scan to destinations set up for the buttons, you can use the buttons on the scanner if the monitor program is running (Scan Photo and Scan Document) See the programs help to set up these shortcuts.

If you have XP, Vista or Win7, you can also scan into Paint (File, Import from Camera or Scanner in Win7). Vista has another program that will aquire scans. Win7 has Windows Fax and Scan (click on the New Scan button).

Scanning needs two-way communication so print servers and USB hubs can interfere. A new USB cable or connecting to a different USB port (direct connection) are quick things to try if you can't get a scan to complete.

I hope this helps.

Can't scan with my HP officejet 4255 all-in-one

Hi
Hope you doing well this year and i am sure that thing will go good as well

the problem you mentioned : When you press the Scan button on the product control panel, nothing happens. A scan does not start.

This issue usually occurs because you do not have the full feature driver installed for the product. Button functions on the product control panel require a full feature software and driver installation for Windows Vista.

Follow these steps to download and install the full feature software from the HP Web site.

1) Turn the product on.
2) Disconnect any USB cable from both the product and the computer.
3) Open a new window to browse to the Select Software and Drivers page:
Click on the Following Link to get the Updated drivers for all OS

DRIVERS HP Officejet 4255

4) Click / select the Operating system
5) Click the Full Feature Software and Drivers option.

6) Click Download only . This option allows you to install the software at any time after the download completes.
7) Click Save , and then browse to the location on your computer where you want to save the file.
8) Click Save . The software downloads to your computer.
Tip: Make a note of the place that you saved the file, in case you want to install it at a later time.
9) When the download is complete and you are ready to install the files, click Open Folder , and then click the downloaded file. The file name ends in .exe .
10) You can accept the default location to save the files. Click Next , and then wait while the installer extracts the files to prepare for installation.
11) When the Install Wizard starts, follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
