Question about Troy-Bilt® Briggs and Stratton Chipper

Chipper makes "sawdust" instead of "mulch"

I purchased this chipper because of the advertising to make "mulch" for my landscaping and garden. Regardless of which hopper I put my limbs into the end result is sawdust. Is there a way to adjust the size of the end product so that I get larger chunks?

There are three different size screens that go below the shredder hammers. If you have the small screen in it, it will make very small pieces. For mulce I use the large one, and sometimes run it without the screen at all.

Put down newspapers everywhere there's grass. Cover with mulch or rocks or the like. Cut holes for non grass and weeds. Works great.

Landscape mulch in the fall problem

The uses of landscape mulch are not limited to weed control. Among the other uses of landscape mulch is as an agent to control erosion. Landscape mulch applied in the fall keeps the severe weather conditions of winter from eroding your soil and robbing it of valuable nutrients. And by insulating the frozen soil from the sun's rays on that odd mild day in the winter, you'll help your plants maintain the protective state of dormancy that they're in. As a bonus, when the landscape mulch decomposes, it will release valuable nutrients into your soil. Landscape mulch also improves moisture-retention in the soil, cutting down on your water bill in the summer.

Compost and Mulch Comparison?

Compost should be worked into the soil (eventually, at least) to make it more fertile. Mulch, by contrast, is spread atop the soil, both to protect the soil from the elements and to suppress weeds. While it is true that organic mulches will eventually decompose, thereby themselves becoming compost, their function as long as they serve as mulch is distinct from the function of compost.

Wood Chipper how to

Great input tina783. I have just one thing to add. Try to shred the branches within a reasonable amount of time. I found out that with my shredder, if I put older, dried up branches in, it tends to take a lot more time, as well as tosses chips back out at you. With newly cut branches, this wasn't nearly as much as an issue.
