Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven
The ovens would previously not work and I just replaced the control board which worked. Then I thought about why the board failed and I realized that neither cooling fan is coming on when I run the ovens. Is there a way to reset the thermal switches or should they be replaced?
To my knowledge the switches are not restable. There is a thermal switch that closes and runs the exhaust fan when the microwave becomes too hot.

The rectifier diode could indeed be bad. But first I would want to know what value (in uF) the old one was and what is the value of the new one? If they're too far off, the difference in the capacitive reactance could throw off the "tuning" of the circuit. The uF value of the capacitor is optimized in relation to the other components used in the system. Of course, you'd also want to be sure your new cap is at or slightly above the working voltage rating of the old one, too.

Thanks for the help !! It turned out to be the oven cavity TCO which is in the upper l/h corner under the grill.. I ordered the part which cost me $21.50 incl shipping.. It's not a big deal to change.. I'm just a little ticked off because I've only used this oven 3-4 times.. It was manufactured in July 2003 (I've had it in storage for two years untill my kitchen renovation was done).. If it's acting up now what else am I in store for ?? Well thanks again !!

If some pads on the keypad are not working, then you have a failed keypad.
If you (or someone you know) might want to replace it yourself, I have uploaded a handy guide with pictures showing you what's typically involved.
You can usually find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.
There should also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.
If you would like to have us do this for you, we do that for $39.95 plus part costs.
On this model, the cover will have to come off to replace the light bulb. If it's mounted in the wall, it will have to come down.
The installation instructions are nice to have in this case. You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.
I have attached a drawing to show where the bulb is on this model. It is located on the right side of the oven next to the wall of the cooking cavity.
The bulbs are available in local grocery stores, hardware stores, and stores like Wal-Mart and Lowe's.
Please feel free to contact me directly if you need more help.
We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

You are correct the fan motor is either stuck or needs replaced.
There is no way to do this without removing the entire microwave. In case your not familiar with how microwaves work, there is a capacitor that is very large inside and can hold a charge even after it is unplugged for up to 24 hours, please take action to prevent getting shocked.
