Well you could try to remove McAfee and install a free alternative such as Avast. If that does not work you can always go back to McAfee if you prefer it. Avast is free, reliable and works very well.

SOURCE: black screen instead of desktop boot screen

The issue can be with any Operating System files that might have gone Curropted.
I recommend you to try pressing the Ctrl + Shift + Esc keys after you are sure that the Operating System is booted which should get you the Task Manager window.
In this, click on File > New Task(Run) and enter Explorer.exe in the field and click on OK.
This should get you the Windows Explorer.
However, I recommend you to either try reinstalling the Operating System in your Notebook to factory settings or Repair the Operating System using Windows XP disk if you have to repair the curropted files.
Find the instructions to Repair or Reinstall the Operating System in your Notebook from the link below :
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00681978&dlc=en

Make sure that you take a backup of all the files before proceeding with reinstalling the Operating System as it will erase all the content in the hard drive if you are using the Disks provided by HP.
If you are not able to see any LDEs blinking in the Notebook when you press the Power Button, the issue can be due to Static Charges which might be preventing the Notebook from starting up. In situations like this, you need to try the steps listed below :
1. Disconnect the AC Adapter.
2. Remove the Battery. Note : Please see that there are no external devices or cables connected to the Notebook. 3. Hold the Power button down for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
4. Reconnect the AC adapter and do NOT connect the battery now. 5. Turn on the Notebook power.
Hope this helps....

SOURCE: Won't load Desktop

Is this running XP? Does the computer shut down or just go back to the welcome screen and ask for your password again?

If it returns to the welcome screen (and it is XP) get the following two files from another xp machine and copy them to the windows\system32 folder.

userinit.exe wsaupdater.exe

Restart the computer and log back in.

Hope this helps

If the ram passed memtest then the problems are likely to by corrupt system files. rather than do a complete reinstall and have to worry about backing up the data try ReImage. They c will remotely fix the system files, leaving your data intact

Don't use it, uninstall it and never use it again. That is a horrible program that will only bring you more viruses.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Mcafee

Though according to the anti-virus comparatives, McAfee anti-virus rates highly amongst virus scanners in terms of available features, McAfee also have some advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages: - McAfee Antivirus includes many features at decent prices. The protection level is decent enough for most users.

Updates are provided regularly, so that your protection software has the most recent updated virus database in order to provide protection from newly added malicious codes and viruses, and the entire updating and maintenance process happens in the background, without the need for user intervention or interference with the tasks on the computer.

Another advantage of McAfee Antivirus is its simple interface, which gives you quick access to all features. You can easily access its user friendly interface to use it, maintain it, and configure it. One of the main advantages of the program. Compared to other antivirus programs McAfee is relatively cheaper, and finally detection rate, when it comes to detection rate McAfee would still be somewhere at the top of the list. While there may be other programs with better detection rates, McAfee should be sufficient to keep those viruses away.

Disadvantages: - Some tests and comparisons carried out by TopTenReviews.com pointed out McAfee Antivirus as not the fastest antivirus around, because it consumes a lot of memory, whether it's during the scan or real time protection.

Another disadvantage is memory usage during scanning, the full scan duration maybe a long time if the program consumes little memory during scanning you could definitely multi task and eventually complete the scan. Unfortunately though, the memory usage too is a bit too high so you'll have to leave your computer alone until the scan completes.

Changed some things on BIOS to remove McAfee virus protection program because the computer was running slow. Now even my internet program (Mozilla Firefox) will not even download updates. I am not sure...

A slow running computer can be fixed by:

-- cleaning system junk
-- optimizing computer services
-- repairing registry
-- defraging registry
-- clearing browsers junk

do these things with some secure tool such as Intel Software Partner Reginout.

Anyway, what are those things you have changed w.r.t BIOS? Make sure that you have removed McAfee completely through control panel.

How do i update my mcafee virus scan?

Purchase the full version and then there is an update option in the application itself. It's one of the application tools.

That said, McAfee would not be my AV program of choice. AVG from Grisoft is free as is Windows Defender. then if you want a commercial pay product, F-Protect, Command AV, and Trend Micro all do a better job in a less evasive way. Meaning less system lag.

It's not a virus. You have "Malware" on your computer. Download a few malware scanners and run them. Next, you will have to get it out of your registry. Otherwise, it will keep coming back. I use PC Toolc "Registry Mechanic". There are many out there, just compare the features to what you need & want. Run it about once every month to keep things cleaned up.

McAffe security protection. Compaq Presario XP

Hi,
The Windows Firewall is different from MCafee Security Centre. And if it has a X on it that means Ur MCafee Protection is disabled or May be expired.
To Check that, Just click on the MCafee Icon on the desktop or on the botton right hand corner, and check if its disabled or u needs to renew it.

Thank You,

AVG free edition should do the trick, but the safest way to get rid of a virus is reformatting your hard drive.

Hello, i have had this problem with my dell, and believe it or not, it is probably your mcafee. Your mcafee could be using most of your processor and your ram, i suggest to reinstall mcafee, look at some upgrades for ram (Random Acess Memory), or buy a new anti virus/anti spyware. Such as eset, norton, zone alarm, and many others.I hope that this helped you!
