Am helping a neighbor who has a cheap Brother sewing machine, the needle does not seem to be centered, the default is to the right. I can center it by changing the needle position.

Some machines do not have a centered needle as a default. That is just how they were made. If she can reposition the needle to the center, then that is a pretty good option. Most older machines with the offset needles default do not have a centering option. (I have an old Nelco that has an offset default--works just fine but I just have to remember that when stitching, the seam line will not be in the center of the presser foot.)

Most needle centering issues involve a slight off-center problem that merely requires a slight tweak. However, as it sounds in your case, if the needlebar position is supposedly set to center but it is actually in the right position, then it may require more than a tweak and need adjusting by a technician. It could be that something has slipped so that the needle position selector is out of place.

Why does it make a knocking noise as it sews?

the needle position is up tight in the holder and no where else
the cut away bit of the needle faces the bobbin case hook and the groove in the needle faces the end of the machine and gives clearance for the thread to pass through the material
from your description and what you did, the needle /hook timing needs adjusting as it is out
turn the machine over by hand as in sewing and watch the position of the eye of the needle and the bobbin case hook
just as the needle starts to move up, the hook should be just above the eye of the needle at the edge of the needle
The adjustment is by loosing off the screw on the vertical shaft at the end of the machine that is attached to an arm that moves the needle up and down and move that bit up or down until the needle is positioned correctly to the hook
tighten up the screw
next is to check the needle tension is not too tight
workshop manuals are available on line in pdf version or take it to a sewing machine repair shop for a proper diagnosis

My Janome 7025 is going in reverse, the back 'handle' is not stuck

It's got multiple issues. Best to take it in and get it fixed all at once. Your reverse could have a broken, or off part inside, and the centering issue has to be re-adjusted by a tech. Usually, if the centering is off, something else will need adjusted to get it back in position.

How to check timing on pe180d embroidery machine

In case of adjusting sewing machine timing, there are twomain parts that you should follow. To adjust the hook needle timing on the rotary hook, first, remove the bobbin, bobbin carrier, and covers so you can see the movement ofthe hook. This may involve removing the needle plate for top loadingassemblies, or removing the hook cap from the front of the machine. Itoften requires the removal of the lower covers to reach the componentparts. Adjust as needed when doing sewing machine repair.Set the machine to a straight stitch at the defaultposition. Different models have different default positions including themost common far left and center positions. If no problems are perceivedin needle bar positioning, the default position will suffice. If thereare needle bar position issues, these need to be adjusted prior to adjustingthe timing. Follow proper sewing machine repair procedures.Rotate the hand wheel toward youuntil you see the needle reach its lowest position and begin its rise. Now lookfor the point of the hook as you continue rotating the hand wheel. Thepoint of the hook should strike inside the needle scarf above the needleby about 0.5mm. Sewing machine repair is vital for smooth operations.Check to see if the hook fails topick up the thread. Double check the needle bar positioning including thehook needle spacing. If these are appropriate and the point of the needlestill fails to pick up the loop thread, proceed to adjust the timing of thehook. Maintain regular sewing machine repair. Look for the lower drivemechanism. It may be a lower shaft with gears on either end. If this isthe case, look to the right end of the shaft for a gear with adjusting setscrews. Loosen and manually adjust the position of the hook. Tightly hold thehand wheel while turning the drive shaft to set the proper position. Retighten adjusting screws. Some models have timing beltsthat control the timing of the sewing machine. Look for a belt connectedon each with to drive gears. Look for work cogs on the belt. Inmost cases, you can reset the timing belt, without replacing it. If,however, the belt requires replacement you will need to do so. Loosen the drive mechanism on the right side to free the movement of the belt.Manually adjust the position of the hook to the needle and re-tighten set screws. This knowledge is vital for effective sewing machine repair.Once the timing has been reset, conduct thorough test sewing on the sewing machine to make sure everything isworking properly.Hope this will help you. Good Luck.

Kenmore sewing machine 385.1960180, problem with needle centering

That sounds like it's definitely an internal adjustment. The machine will need to be opened up and the left/right adjustment taken care of. Is this machine one that you can open the top easily, or is it the type that has the front and rear shell?

When threading my machine the needle is not picking up the bobbin thread. I have a viking huskvarna 205. I have checked the bobbin threading & it is ok, the hook is in place but when the needle is in the...

it is called needle and hook timing
after the needle has been fully down and is starting to come back up the hook for the bobbin carrier should be at or slightly before the eye of the needle
in most machines it is adjustable by loosening of the clamp on the needle shaft and moving the shaft up or down to get the desired position relation of needle to hook
don't turn the machine or that alters the hook position so leave it steady while moving the needle shaft
once the desired timing is achieved re-tension the clamp on the shaft
go google and type in--t workshop manual ( not user ) for your make and model machine manual)in pdf version for your make and model machine and the needle /hook timing and adjustment procedure should be in there
