SOURCE: game freeze
Vista is the issue.
Very few games run well on Vista.
Have you defragmented your computer this month?
How much free space remains on your Hard Drive? It needs to be above 15%.
Go to your control panel, then display and see what video card is showing.I
If it is an nVidia card, go to their web page and update the drivers.
Then go to DirectX at Microsoft and get the 9.0C or above update.

I am not sure if this is the actual problem but as with many PS consoles, they go through many firmware updates. By now they should be around 3 or 4. After Firmware 2 they, hopefully temporarily, dropped PS2 and PS1 compatibility. PS2 had 12 different firmwares 12 being the firmware for the PS2 slim. I am guessing that with the firmware they have right now for the PS3 that there are still bugs to work out. There are 2 main reasons that I am holding out on getting a PS3. Firstly, it is too darn expensive. Within a year or 2, with blu-ray winning the HDVD war, prices for Blu-ray players as well as associated technologies will go down, including the PS3. And Secondly, The Firmware is way too new. The current firmware, as far as I know is not currently compatible with older PS consoles and still has some problems with it's own games. This might account for your problems with updates. It would be awesome, and if you want you can pose this possibility to Sony, to have flashable firmware so you can update as new firmware is introduced. Given the things I just said, you have 2 options, Either you can continue playing realizing that the problem may be with the game update and just play without it, or you can return your ps3 and wait for newer firmware to come out. If you have the money, and are willing to do some surgery on your ps3, first try resetting the internal harddrive. I am not sure how you do that. You will have to look that up online. If that doesn't work you can try buying a new hard drive (Western Digitals Scorpio Blue 500GB is a good one, i've heard. I am currently running it in my laptop. Also has a looooooooottttt of memory space for game saves. After the PS3 software is installed you have like 440-460 GB of free space). If nothing else works, just take back the system and wait for newer firmware to come out. I recommend waiting for update 7 or 8. hopefully by then, they will have added back backwards compatibility so you can play your ps2 and psone games as well.

I'm assuming that when you say "chipped" you mean "hacked"
If this is the case and you have an M33 firmware, you have 2 options.
1. get it reflashed or update it to a newer firmware which will reset all of your settings.
2. press select and at the top of the screen there will be a menu that you can change 2 cpu speeds. play with those settings until the games play smoothly.
If that doesn't work your only option is choice #1.
