Question about Stairmaster Exercise & Fitness

StairMaster 4000PT console gets pixalated, machine freezes after 15 minutes of working out

I've had the machine for years. Love it. But now after 15 minutes it stops working and the screen flashes in little strange patterns. It doesn't respond to any keys being pressed. If I unplug & replug it in, it works for maybe 2-5 minutes. Nat. Gym Supply checked the console said it was fine. I replaced the power source. Still same problem. Please, any help you have would be awesome.

This really still sounds like a console issue. You can check your load resistor just to make sure that is not causing an issue. It should be labeled as to what ohms it is rated as. Simply unhook it and, using a multi-meter, check the ohms. It should be +or- 10%. I am attaching a link to a video on how to use a multi-meter just in case.

SOURCE: stairmaster 4000 crazy console

Check all connections from power source in inside the cover where alternator is to upper display then if the problem still continues I suspect your upper console is going south. Call National Gym Supply @ 1-800-496-7278 they can either repair it or may have a exchange board for you.

How do I test for continuity of the gray cable on my Stairmaster 4000PT?

Testing for Continuity of the Gray Cable on a Stairmaster 4000PT
  1. First disconnect the grey cable from the back of the console and UNPLUG YOUR MACHINE from the wall.
  2. If your cable has a 6-pin round connector, you will need to check pin sockets #5 (black wire), #3 (blue wire), #2 (brown wire) and #4 (white wire) with your ohmmeter for continuity in each pin. Should get continuity from all if cable is good.
If your cable is a 9-pin cable, you will need to check pin sockets #5 (blue wire), #3 (black wire), #2 (brown wire) and #4 (white wire) with your ohmmeter for continuity in each pin. Should get continuity from all if cable is good.

Replacement Parts for Fitness Exercise Equipment at SPORTSMITH

Check continuity of the console cable. If this checks out, open the console and look for any corrosion on the circuit board. If this seems to be the issue, you will have to find someone to repair the circuit board as they are no longer available.

Keypad Test for Stairmaster 4000PT Stepper

Preform this test if you are having trouble entering data into the console. If you cannot enter the DIAGNOSTIC code due to an inoperable keypad, replace the console.
  1. Press [2] to start the test.
  2. The display LEDs will light up in an L-shaped formation, representing the keypad matrix. Pressing a button on either the exercise program keypad or the function keypad will light an LED within the outline on the display that corresponds to that button's position on the console.
  3. Firmly press each button. If the LED corresponding to the button you pushed does not light up, the keypad is bad and the console should be replaced.
  4. Press [CLEAR] to test the LED and then end the test 10 seconds later.

Is there a Quick Test I can do when there is No Resistance on my Stairmaster...

The following test will help to determine if the cause of no resistance on your Stairmaster 4000PT stepper is the console. By performing the following test, the console is eliminated from the electrical circuit. If resistance is present when the test is performed, the console is bad. Paper Clip Trick
  1. First UNPLUG YOUR MACHINE from the wall, then disconnect the grey cable from the back of the console.
  2. If your cable is a 6-pin round connector or a 9-pin square connector, using a paper clip formed into a "U" shape, insert the ends of the paper clip in the pin sockets #2 and #4. Then you will need to plug the power cord back in and start stepping. You should experience full pedal resistance.
  3. If there is still no pedal resistance, UNPLUG YOUR MACHINE from the wall and disconnect the wire from an end of the load resistor so that there is no wire attached to that end. Then plug the power cord back in and perform the paper clip test again. If resistance is present, the load resistor needs replaced. If resistance is not present, either the gray cable or the alternator is bad.
