Either the software (operating system) is terribly corrupted or you have an issue with one of your peripherals. Disconnect everything except monitor, hard drive, and memory and attempt boot up. If it works then something that you disconnected is the culprit. If it is still not booting the operating system, if possible, needs to be repaired.

In a way you are lucky because this gives you a golden opportunity to dump Vista, the worst of the worst.

How do I remove windows 8 without uninstalling windows vista??

I'm sorry to say but you are in uncharted territory with Windows 8. It is so new that it is hard to tell what is going on. I would suggested backing up your hard drive and then reinstalling Vista. You will waste more time trying to figure it out then to reinstall the OS.

AnyPasskey Windows Password Recovery would be your first choice! This easy-to-use yet powerful Windows password reset tool could reset any account passwords, including Windows local administrator, Domain Administrator and other user account password, etc. instantly by creating a bootable CD/DVD or USB drive on all Windows OS, such as Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000 and Server 2003, 2008, etc. Just in minutes, no need to re-install Windows or formatting hard disk, you can get access to your computer again without any data losing or file damaging. Pretty easy procedures even it is your first try. 6_19_2012_2_15_03_am.jpg

This looks like a corrupted file in the boot section or a virus attack. the only solution is to reinstall the OS. there is no hardware error, if you had any hardware error the display will not be working fine. reinstall the Windows OS.

Booting up problem on gateway laptop

If you have a Windows XP/Vista/Vista64/7 Disc, have your Laptop boot from it, This will require a re instillation of Windows, but will fix your laptop right up, and if you don't have one, they are cheaper than laptops and will save you money. Plus, they can be reused on the same computer.

Xp home installation

You need to have installed drivers for xp for that hard drive. Without them it won't load.
You can go to the Gateway site and enter your serial number to see the original configuration of your system, get the names of the hardware installed on it, and look for drivers for xp for all of that hardware.
Please see this article and follow the links at the end to make sure you have all the drivers needed for an xp installation. Downgrade vista to xp
Also an excellent tutorial for updating drivers here and a source of drivers here

Hard drive not working properly

What is the original OS? If it's XP you can't install 98 over the top of it without formatting it to FAT32 first.
