I have also performed a reset from the hidden menu. The black imaging unit count was reset to zero but the machine is still saying to replace the imaging unit.
If the unit is remanufactured or if you know how, you will have to disassembly the imaging unit and replace the fuser that blowns or simply just solder it. http://www.uninetimaging.com/downloads/technical/xerox/english/Xerox_Phaser_7400_Reman_Eng.pdf

Testimonial: "Thanks for your quick response. I have tried using 62ma fuses connected to the rear imaging unit contacts and it wont blow. I wonder if the "Top door open" message is causing a false reading. The printer was operating before the message appeared to replace imaging unit. After that I can't get the message to go away and also the "Top door open" appeared."
A new development. While in service mode I checked additional sensors and
the "top door open" message appears even while the door is shut. Also while looking at the printer within a browser the "Top door open" is displayed, not "replace black imaging unit."
Top door open leads to a faulty sensor in that door. Every door has a sensor to read uf the door is open or not. Please check the connections or damage in the interlock switch. Check chapter 8. page 129 on Service Manualhttp://www.hpitechnologies.com/files/740...

There really isnt an easy way to do that.
The transfer belt assembly starts off with a fuse on it to blow immediatly on install, and a counter that is internal so that it will end of life and have to be replaced. It's really not a convience counter but an obsolence counter.

If the machine calls for a new unit, a new not used cartridge must be installed to clear the message

These units are automatically reset with a fuse. When you put the imaging unit in it will completes a connection which resets the count then simultaniously blows the fuse. Sometimes the fuse blows before the reset, which is what it sounds like happened here. The machine should print normally but the error will persist until the unit is replaced with a new one. Is the the imaging unit an OEM unit or remanufactured? Whoever you got the unit from should replace it as defective free of charge. If it is OEM you might have to go through Xerox to get it replaced. I don't know if the Big Box stores will.

You can buy a kit to refurbish your reset counter for $20.00 including shipping at http://skyforms.netfirms.com/cgi-bin/phaser.cgi . It adds 45,000 copies to the counter. Also, a guy on ebay sells the kit already reset for 32.95 plus shipping.

There is a snippet on the Xerox website to solve
imaging unit recognition problems, link below.
http://www.support.xerox.com/support/phaser-7760/downloads/engb.html?operatingSystem=winxp&fileLanguage=en_GB
Usually this problem only occurs if the NVRAM has been reset or the engine
board has been replaced without backing up the NVRAM.
You can download the snippet to your printer through Centreware or by
downloading the 'File Downloader' utility from the same page above.
Hope this helps.
