Removing driver side interior door panel

Sometimes a u- pick auto yard will be the best place to start. Otherwise I would look to driving out of state to find a yard that you can pick yourself.

Hi, it's possible the bulb is burned out or not making good contact with the circuit board. It should come on during the bulb check when you first turn the key on. Pull out the cluster and check the bulb. If it's good, see if you can clean the contact surfaces to get it working again. Or, move to another state where they don't worry about stupid things like a light bulb.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  2. Remove the two steering column shroud-to-panel retaining screws and remove the shroud.
  3. Remove the lower instrument panel trim.
  4. Remove the cluster trim cover from the instrument panel by removing the eight screws.
  5. Remove the four instrument cluster to panel retaining screws.
  6. Position the cluster slightly away from the panel for access to the back of the cluster to disconnect the speedometer.

If there is not sufficient access to disengage the speedometer cable from the speedometer, it may be necessary to remove the speedometer cable at the transmission and pull cable through cowl, to allow room to reach the speedometer quick disconnect.
  1. Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the printed circuit, and any bulb-and-socket assemblies from the wiring harness to the cluster assembly and remove the cluster assembly from the instrument panel.

To install:
  1. Apply approximately 1 / 8 in. diameter ball of D7AZ-19A331-A Silicone Dielectric compound or equivalent in the drive hole of the speedometer head.
  2. Position the cluster near its opening in the instrument panel.
  3. Connect the wiring harness connector to the printed circuit, and any bulb-and-socket assemblies from the wiring harness to the cluster assembly.
  4. Position the cluster to the instrument panel and install the four cluster to panel retaining screws.
  5. Install the panel trim covers and the steering column shroud.
  6. Connect the battery ground cable.
  7. Check operation of all gauges, lamps and signals.

Steps to follow

1.Buy the replacement mirror, making sure that it is an exact match to your vehicle's make, model and year. You can order it through your dealership. If you'd like to save more money, you can order a mirror online or buy one from a junkyard or a salvage yard that sells auto parts.

2.Roll down your window and shut your vehicle off.

3.Disconnect the battery's negative cable. This is important, because there is a risk of electrocution if you do not perform this step.

4.Take off the interior door panel by using your pry tool to remove the trim pieces. Then use the screwdriver to remove the screws holding the panel in place. You may have to remove a corner trim piece before the door panel lifts off.

5.Unplug the wiring harness if you have power-controlled mirrors. If you have manual roll-down windows, skip this step.

6.Take out the mirror bolts with either a socket wrench or a nut driver, so that you can remove the entire mirror assembly from the car.

7.Separate the actual mirror from the mirror assembly. Use a torx driver to extract the screws, and then pry the plastic tabs on the backing until the two pieces separate.

8.Attach the new mirror to the assembly by snapping it onto the backing with the tabs.

9.Put the new mirror, attached to the backing, into the mirror assembly.

10.Reverse the steps to reinstall the entire mirror assembly back onto the vehicle.

How to remove the door panel on 1991 mercure cougar. I need to replace window motors.


1989-92 Models
(see Figure 8 - click over pic for zoom)
  1. Remove window regulator switch housing.
  2. Remove the door inside handle cup (snaps out).

  1. Remove the self tapping screw retaining door trim panel upper front extension assembly, and remove assembly.
  2. Remove the two self tapping screws retaining door trim panel to the door inner panel.
  3. Lift the door trim panel upward and snap out trim panel.
  4. Disconnect the wire harness for courtesy lamp.
To install:
  1. Attach the wiring harness to the courtesy lamp.
  2. Place the door panel into position, then tighten the panel to the inner panel.
  3. Attach the upper front extension assembly.
  4. Snap the door handle cup on the door assembly.
  5. Install the window regulator switch housing.

Electric Window Motor
  1. Remove the trim panel and watershield.
  2. Remove the speakers.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Disconnect the motor wires and the connector.
  5. Using the dimples located on the inner door panel, drill 3 / 4 in. (19mm) holes for access to the motor.
WARNING When drilling the holes, the glass must be in the up position. The hole saw pilot must not extend more than1/4in. (6mm) beyond the hole saw.
CAUTION Secure the regulator in a vise and drill a5/16in. (8mm) hole through the regulator sector gear and the plate. Install a1/4in. (6mm) bolt and nut in the hole to prevent the sector gear from moving when the motor and drive assembly is removed.
  1. Working through the holes, remove the 3 motor and drive-to-regulator attaching bolts. Remove the motor and drive from the door.
To install:
  1. Clean the chips of metal from the surrounding area. Then coat the bare metal to avoid rust.
  2. When installing the motor and drive to the regulator and install the 3 screws just snugly enough to hold it. Remove the regulator restraining bolt and nut if the old regulator was re-used.
  3. Connect the negative battery cable.
  4. Connect the wires and cycle the glass through its run to ensure gear engagement. Then, tighten the attaching screws to 50-85 inch lbs. (6-10 Nm).
  5. Install the speakers and door trim panel with watershield.

I have a 96 mercury mark 5, when i press the brake it wont shift out of park. It was intermedeit now its just locked.

This is the procedure for a 93 Marquis, should be similar, hope it helps.
Brake Shift Interlock Solenoid

1. Disconnect battery ground cable and air bag backup power supply.

2. Remove lower RH and LH mouldings from instrument panel by pulling up and snapping out of retainer.

3. Remove five retaining screws from instrument panel lower cover and remove cover.

4. Remove instrument panel reinforcement.

5. Disconnect transmission range selector cable from actuator housing by removing one screw.

6. Remove four column attaching nuts and lower column assembly.

7. Remove electrical harness from brake shift interlock (BSI) solenoid assembly.

8. Remove three screws attaching BSI solenoid and insert plate to column assembly and remove solenoid and insert plate. Separate solenoid from insert plate by removing tinnerman clip.

1. Position BSI solenoid and insert plate in place and attach to column assembly with three screws as shown.

2. Connect electrical harness to BSI solenoid.

3. Attach column assembly to half car beam with four nuts.

4. Connect transmission range selector cable to column assembly with one screw.

5. Attach instrument panel reinforcement brace with three bolts.

6. Attach instrument panel lower trim cover with five bolts.

7. Install RH and LH mouldings on instrument panel.

8. Connect air bag backup power supply and battery ground cable.
