What software are you using to write files to the disk? Your software is probably not capable of writing dl dvd's. Use a program like imgburn.

SOURCE: how to change faceplate on LightScribe SuperMulti 8X DVD R/RW with Double Layer Support in hp pavilion

Why would you want to remove the faceplate?

If you have a dvd or cd stuck in the drive straighten out a gem clip (paper clip) and stick it into the hole that is on the faceplate (drive drawer that holds the cd or dvd) and push it while you press the eject button.

Boot the computer using the image. On Windows based systems you can run a demo (a mock install) to verify compatibility with the hardware. If you are satisfied you may install it alongside Windows (dual boot), or alone. There should be something similar for macs (I know close to nothing on those machines).

Running ubuntu on (old!) hp e-pc 42; need Windows. Would it be worthwhile installing Vista? How about 7? Thanks.

Based on the specs of your computer I don't recommend that you upgrade to either one of those. You would not want to use Vista because it would run really slow on your computer, and Vista itself is not very good. And if you can't run Vista, you most likely can't run Windows 7 because it requires even more than Vista.

I recommend that you use Windows XP, not only because aside from Windows 7 and Snow Leopard it is my favorite Operating System, it is also the OS that was originally shipped with that specific model computer.

Short answer: Go with Windows XP

Hope this helps!

I put ubuntu the computer over heet and now only work the trial of ubuntu. how vista can run again?

If you erased the Windows partition when you installed Ubuntu you will need to re-insert your Windows Vista disc and reinstall Windows over Ubuntu using that, This will only work if you have enough keys remaining on your Windows Vista License, however. Hope this helps.

it is very hard for me to help someone that wants to get rid of LINUX :( ...but I'm a proffessional and I'm letting my feelings aside ha!

Firs is your MBR was created with UBUNTU or Windows (in other words when you boot is it a windows menu or a LINUX menu) that lets you choose the boot options? if it's LINUX you have to use a LINUX base partition editor to edit the MBR (the way the system will boot), if it's a Windows MBR then you normally ave to delete the LINUX partiton... (if Windows can not delete it you can use a LINUX base disk partitioner) be extra prudent using disk partition editors, if you do not understand what you do you can LOSE data...

Good luck!

Ubuntu installation

Relax Sairam -- you don't have know all these answers.

First step, download Ubuntu and burn to a CD .

Second adjust your bios if necessary to change the boot preferences on your machine, so that it will try your CD/DVD device first before trying to boot from a hard disk.

Third, let the Ubuntu Live CD execute and bring up a desktop. On the desktop, there should be an icon to actually install Ubuntu. It will guide your through all the decisions that you need to make.

You may find it advantageous to have a "dual boot" configuration on your machine... i.e., having the choice of running some windows operating system, or ubuntu.

How to remove Ubuntu from a Vista dual-boot config

On my new PC I wanted (still want) to have toa go with Linux. I chose to experiment with Ubuntu. I downloaded thedesktop CD, burned it, freed up some disk space (inside Vista) andloaded up Ubuntu from the CD. After some experimenting I figured outhow to install Ubuntu in the empty disk space and it all worked fine(GRUB took over my booting (recognized Vista automatically!) and Ubuntuloaded up fine).

Then I tried to install my GPU drivers andeverything went wrong.. For some reason Ubuntu wouldn't boot anymore(failed to load X-Server or something). I was completely lost andwanted to remove Ubuntu.

This is where things start to get really messy!

Ifyou simply remove the Ubuntu partition, GRUB (Linux boot loader) willstill be on your PC (in control). It will trip out, as the Ubuntupartition will be removed.. Bad thing!

So you need to restore your Master Boot Record (MBR) for Vista (so that Vista will handle the booting, not GRUB).

Googleonly pointed me to sites that explained how to REMOVE VISTA, whichisn't what I wanted. Many sites talked about the 'fixmbr' command, butthis is really only available in Windows XP.

So how do you restore your MBR for Windows Vista?

1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
7. Type Bootrec.exe /FixMbr, and then press ENTER.

That'sit. Now when you reboot your PC, Vista will load automatically... Youcan now safely boot using your Ubuntu desktop CD, to use the built inGnome Partition Manager to remove your Ubuntu partition!

Dual Booting

possibly by first creating a new partition large enough for Linux OS, but does not solve your problem...try getting a VISTA startup disc from another pc (floppies if you have the drive) and startup from these.
