There is a control on the receiver for digital input - make sure it is set that way and not in the analog position.

SOURCE: HK AVR35 Receiver - Dolby Digital not displaying or working

If the display is showing as optical/PCM, then the input signal is in 2 Ch Stereo.

Try to change the signal from the source i.e. the DVD player, On the remote, go to audio and press repatedly , the audio would change from audio1, audio 2 .... and so on, depending upon how may have been recorded on the DVD. If the DVD is recorded in Dolby Digital, it may show the audio as Dolby Digital 5.1 on you monitor. Once this setting has been done, your Receiver should automatically detect it and show as Optical/Dolby digital.

Please let me know if you you solve your problem.

SOURCE: I have a harman kardon

We would have the dvd player optical go to the receiver, and the DVD HDMI to the TV.

SOURCE: I connected the optical outputs

Cable boxes generally do not have the optical out turned on by default, especially if they are HDMI compatible. You need to go to your settings menu on the cable box and into the audio settings and probably choose Dolby Digital Out. I say probably because you didn't provide any information regarding your brand of cable box so I can only tell you how it is on mine (might say digital optical, I don't know). By the way, if you're using an HD Cable Box with HDMI out directly into your TV (which if you have Blu-Ray player as well, it only makes sense that you have an HDTV with HDMI and the same for cable) I have no doubt that your cable box has automatically switched the audio output to HDMI.
I've gone through your manual and I see nothing to indicate that it can't use both digital optical inputs on the unit but there is a very lengthy section on setting up inputs using the On-Screen Dispay that you might want to consider going through. It also indicates that you could have issues if your box doesn't switches between analog and digital. I find that VERY unlikely.

If all else fails, your system does accept coaxial didgital in as well. There is zero difference in audio quality between digital coax and fiber optic and they are very cheap.

This being said. I think based on the information you provided, the issue is in the settings of your cable box.

I can't speak on whether or not the apple tv has such a setting but the Bluray players does. You go into the bluray player's settings and change the audio output.Your choices should be 2 ch possibly hdmi, bitstream, pcm, and auto. Try hdmi, 2 ch, and pcm because if you have it on auto you might not get sound via an hdmi cable and it's probably not bitstream but try bitstream if none of the others work.

I have an RCA home theatre...model rt2910. I have hooked my PS3 via HDMI to the TV for the video and used an optical cable for the audio. I set the PS3 to send video via HDMI and audio via optical cable....

You should have the HDMI plugged into the Home theater unit. The theater unit then is attached to the TV using the HDMI out.
The home theater unit passes the HDMI through to the TV while playing the audio for you.
You will likely need to select the correct source on your RT2910.
Here is a link to the manual.

I don't have a direct solution but I am having the same problem when connecting (1) my Apple TV (2) my Blu-Ray player, etc. via HDMI. I also have a digital camera that puts out HDMI, and when I hook it up, I get the same story -- video only, no sound through the optical digital output of the TV receiver.

I am guessing that the HDMI inputs were an afterthought on this model, especially since the printed manual doesn't even show or mention the HDMI inputs at all! So my guess is that the TV's receiver does not convert the sound from the HDMI to the optical digital output. It does, however, send the amplified HDMI sound to the stereo speaker outputs on the monitor. It appears that only the digital tuner's 5.1 sound comes out on the optical digital output.

This is what I have observed, for what it's worth.

Hello,

Adjust the system's audio output settings. These settings are mainly used when the system is connected to audio devices that support digital audio output, such as AV amplifiers (receivers) for home entertainment systems.
1.
Confirm the formats supported by your audio device.
Settings vary depending on supported formats. For details, refer to the instructions supplied with the audio device.
2.
Select in_soundset.gif (Sound Settings) under in_setting.gif (Settings) in the home menu.
3.
Select [Audio Output Settings].
4.
Select the input connector on the audio device. Channel numbers and audio formats that are supported vary depending on the connector in use.

Select audio output formats.
Select all output formats that are supported by the audio device in use. If [Audio Input Connector / SCART / AV MULTI] is selected in step 4, the screen for selecting audio output formats will not be displayed. If [HDMI] is selected, you can also select to automatically set the audio output format. (In this case, the HDMI device must be turned on.)
soundoutput003.jpg 6.
Check your settings.
You can go back to the previous screen and revise the settings by pressing the in_left_key.gif button.
soundoutput002.jpg 7.
Save your settings.
The audio output settings are saved on the system.
Hints
  • [Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio is set to be output from all output connectors by default. If you change the audio output settings, audio will be output only from the connectors that were set.
  • If you change the audio output settings, the system will no longer be able to output audio from multiple output connectors at the same time. For example, if your system is connected to a TV via an HDMI cable and to an audio device via a digital optical cable and you switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings], audio will no longer be output from the TV. To output audio from the TV, switch the setting to [HDMI], or select in_setting.gif (Settings) > in_soundset.gif (Sound Settings) > [Audio Multi-Output] and set the option to [On].
  • If you select [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 88.2 kHz] or [Linear PCM 2 Ch. 176.4 kHz] in step 5, sound may be intermittent or may not be emitted from some audio devices.
  • When using an HDMI cable, only [Linear PCM 2 Ch.] audio will be output from PlayStation®2 and PlayStation® format software. To output Dolby Digital or DTS audio, you must connect the PS3™ system and the audio device using a digital optical cable and switch to [Digital Out (Optical)] under [Audio Output Settings].
  • If a device that is not compatible with the HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) standard is connected to the system using an HDMI cable, video and/or audio cannot be output from the system.

Hope it helped.

Simultaneous Optical & HDMI Audio on PS3

I'm almost positive it cannot stream the sound through two outputs by design. However if your TV has a digital optical output you can run it to the TV via HDMI and from the TV to the receiver go with the optical. It shouldn't bother the quality at all being HDMI is also a digital interface, you're just passing it through your TV.

Connecting a Dish 622 Receiver to the HTR500 and a Sony HDTV TV

I haven't researched to actual manuals for your equipment, but I'm guessing that the optical may be disabled when the HDMI is used. You could try using the component video outputs to the TV and then the optical to the Onkyo.
