Sometimes on these small motors it is easier to do it with power head off,then you can see where pipe is going

How do i change a neutral safety switch on a 1999 ford expedition eddie bauer 5.4 liter 2 wheel drive


neutral safety switch is attached on the outside of trans. remove the electrical connections. remove the shift cable/linkage arm that is attached to the trans shift rod. remove any other screws or bolt that hold the neutral safety switch. the switch should now slips off the shift rod. attach new part and reinstall.

Pices of impeller could be stuck in block,put hand on top of block and feel if it is running hot,blow compressed air into tell tale and see if that helps

Just cut a square hole in said plastic sheet and look to see what you want to see. Then just tale the plastic sheet back up when your done.

YOU HAVE TO UNSCREW THE SHIFT LEVER KNOB. REMOVE THE CENTER CONSOLE.REMOVE THE RUBBER SHIFT LEVER BOOT AND THE DUST SEAL.YOU NEED TO RAISE SUPPORT VECHICLE ON JACKSTANDS ON LEVEL SOLID GROUND.YOU HAVE TO DISCONNECT THE EXTENSION ROD FROM THE TRANSAXLE.SIMPLY REMOVE THE BOLT THAT ATTACHES IT TO THE EXTENSION BRACKET.TO DISCONNECT THE SHIFT ROD FROM THE TRANSAXLE PUSH THE DUST BOOT FORWARD REMOVE THE CLIP AND DRIVE OUT THE SPRING PIN WITH A PIN PUNCH.DISCARD THE SPRING PIN.DO NOT REUSE IT.TO DISCONNECT THE REAR END OF THE SHIFT ROD FROM THE SHIFT LEVER REMOVE THE NUTS AND BOLTS.THEN REMOVE THE TWO NUTS AND WASHERS THAT RETAIN THE CHANGE BALL HOLDER TO THE UNDERSIDE OF THE EXTENSION ROD AND REMOVE THE CHANGE BALL HOLDER LOWER THE SHIFT LEVER DUST SEAL,SHIFT LEVER BALL SEAT,SHIFT LEVER AND EXTENSION ROD.INSPECT THE BUSHING AT THE FRONT END OF THE EXTENSION ROD AND REPLACE IT IF ITS CRACKED TORN OR WORN. I installed a muncie m20 tranny in my 72 camaro and thought the shft rods were set ..but turns out 1st gear was in the 2nd gear position i tried flipping rod paddles upside down now gears are locked up...


You are right about the shift pattern. Reverse is hard left and up.If your gears are locked up, you'll probably have to remove the side cover and reset the shift levers to their neutral position and then slide gears around to put it back on. With it back on the shift levers should point up toward the car floor. 3-4 is the shift lever closest to the engine. 1-2 is the middle one and reverse is the one closest to the back of the tranny. Check all your swivel points for looseness. If there is any play then you'll have to bush it out or you'll have trouble getting it to shift into gear and stay in. I used some old copper pipe to make bushings on mine, because it used to jump out of gear.
To properly attach your shift linkage, put the shifter and the trans mounted shift levers in neutral. Loosen the locking clamps so the shift rods slide freely. start with the reverse lever, which is the inner most rod on the shifter and tighten the rod nut against the swivel. Then tighten the lock nut. Do the same with the 1-2 rod on the middle rod on the shifter and then the 3-4 which is the outside rod . This should set you up, according to Chilton.
They note that if the tranny is 68 Camero Muncie the shift rods need to be shortened 3 complete turns of the lock nut.

Un screw the nut on the drain tail piece that attaches the rod to drain pipe .Pull the rod out just slightly.Hold the drain plug in the hole with the notch sitting side ways.Push the rod back in angled so that the tip inside drain is angled up.You should feel it go through the notch on the drain plug .If it has you should not be able to pull it out.Tighten the nut hand tight and work the plunger it should be attached .If not loosen the nut again pull back on the rod and shift it around until you feel it go through the notched hole on the plug bottom

Wont shift between forward and reverse.


The shift rod actually connects to the transmission somewhere close to the middle of the bike
