SOURCE: operator manual for huffy crosswind bike grip shift

Look for the manufacturers name and model number on the gripshift and check at www.parktool.com. Look under derailleurs for repair tips which will give you an idea how they work. A twelve speed has six gears on the rear sprocket and two on the crank giving you a combination of twelve speeds. sheldonbrown.com is another good site with good articles and pictures.

If the cable is rusty or otherwise binding it won't let the derailleur fall toward the smaller sprockets when the control is moved. Likewise, it may not even let you move the control in the direction that pulls the cable (bigger rings).

If you don't know much about the process I suggest you read this:

http://coachlevi.com/cycling/complete-beginner-guide-to-bicycle-gears-shifting/

and take the bike to a Local Bike Shop for a look-see and maybe a tune-up.

SOURCE: Hello there! My mom just

first identify the problen is it front or rear derailuer.secondly bike shop mechanic hate cheap mass produced bikes because they do not sell them
so lets solve your problem, okay sometimes this can be an adjustment issue.now if its bunching on front then first read your owners manual to see which gears are compatible, sometimes it will suggest not using certain gears, secondly if yhe chain has fallen off and got jammed it may be bent and need replaced visually confirm if the chain is straight.okay if it is not the chain then the length and length adjustment can be changed using the adjustment on the rear derailuer look and you will see 3 screws located on it the two with L /H are for adjusting the gear stops l is for low gears,so it does not go too far and wedge between the gear and spokes,H is for the small gear(high)if it goes past and falls off adjust this one.lastly the one located at the very rear adjusts chain tension the loosening of this one will relax the chain and apply more chain on the gears   tightening of this one will tighten the chain, adjusted properly your chain should not bow down over adjustment will cause chain skips.now if there is too much slack in the cable that is adjusted by the adjusters on the ends of the cable where it meets the shifters, learning to adjust your bike will save you a lot of money in the long run.
hope this helps

The technique is online in many places. "how to shift a bicyce". If you have mechanical issues (besides not pedaling while shifting) try to define them better.

The owner's manual doesn't do a very good job of explaining how to repair your shifters. Here is a link to various shifting problems and how to fix them.

I need 2,3 & 4 gear for Yamaha 1100 special 1982 model

Instructions
    • 1 The gears on a motorcycle run in this order: first, neutral, second, third, fourth and fifth. When you are moving, shifting up from first gear will skip over neutral and shift you right into second gear. The only time that shifting up from first will get you into neutral is when you are not moving.
    • 2 Pull in the clutch lever and tap the gear lever down until it stops. This will signify first gear. Pressing the gear lever down will shift you down one step and pressing it up will shift up one step.
    • 3 Tap the gear lever up one click while still holding in the clutch. This will put the bike into neutral.
    • 4 Start the bike. The bike needs to be in neutral to start.
    • 5 Hold in the clutch lever and tap the shifting lever down to shift to first gear.
    • 6 Release the clutch slowly and give it just enough gas to get moving.
    • 7 Listen to the motor to know when you need to shift. If the engine is making a low grumbling noise, then it will need to be shifted down. If it is making a high squealing noise, then it needs to be shifted up.

In shifting though gears, with bike running and stationary, after shifting in to first gear hard to shift into neutral without tuning off power to bike.

The bike has a slightly bent shift fork. The repair is a pretty major operation and I don't recommend the casual mechanic attempt it. Below is a diagram showing how the shift drum moves slider gears for different gear changes. Please rate my answer. Thanks. tombones49_128.gif

Wont shift into 2nd

First, with the bike not running, rock the bike back and forth and try to shift the gears. You should be able to shift up through all the gears and back down. If you can't, the problem is in the shifting mechanism. They've had some shifter pawl problems on earlier models. You'll have to pull the primary cover to get to the shifting mechanism.

Next, put the bike in first gear with the engine off. Now, pull the clutch in and try to start the engine. If the bike lurches forward, you're problem is the clutch. Check the adjustment of the clutch according to the service manual.
