The best way to solve this problem is to pressure/vacuum test the carburetor to find if the check valve(s) is working properly. If not, the carb needs to be rebuilt or replaced.

SOURCE: seems to flood easily.

Check the fuel filter, air cleaner, and muffler for plugging. Check the fuel lines for decay or other problems. Be sure that you have fresh fuel mix in the tank. Check the quality of the spark at the plug--it should be blue and snappy (plug gapped 0.020"). If weak looking, try a fresh plug first--if no help, remove the left engine case to expose the flywheel and ignition module. Turn the flywheel magnets just under the module poles, insert a thin business card into the pole gaps, loosen the module screws to allow the module poles to contact the magnets. Tighten the screws, and rotate the flywheel slightly to remove the card. Rotate the flywheel one full turn to make sure the gaps don't close up further. Reassemble and test for spark again. If ok, try for running the engine. Be sure the engine 4-strokes when running unloaded, but immediately 2-strokes when cutting by adjusting the H jet needle. Hope this helps!

New ryobi wont start

Be sure that you have the correct mixture of gas and oil. Prime the carburetor, adjust the choke, then pull the rope. Sometimes initially you may need to do the priming processes several times.

Engine will not start by pull rope

Is there any chance that this generator sat with fuel older than sixty days in it?

All gasolines, including non-ethanol, are organic. They will encounter chain phase separation if not treated with a reputable stabilizer. They fuel simply breaks down over time, and it has a very short shelf life.

Fuel that contains ethanol is even worst when untreated. The alcohol in the fuel will draw moisture from the air. Over time, it will accumulate water in the gas storage can, fuel tank, and carburetor, causing corrosion inside carburetor components. This is what I suspect from the symptoms you describe.

This carburetor needs to be disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. The float is probably stuck, and there is a chance that the mixture screw (if equipped) is clogged with corrosion or foreign matter.

If it is possible to remove the mixture screw (sometimes the plastic limiter caps can be easily pried away), be sure to notate the orientation of the screw. Then close the screw until it barely seats, carefully counting the turns. Add this number to the notes, and it can be replaced later to the exact position.

I used a thin piece of wire to clean a badly corroded Honda carburetor once the mixture screw was removed. The wire was used to scrape back and forth through the hole at the end of the seat (it could be seen protruding into the carburetor bore). The screw was lightly scrubbed with a wire brush. The entire carburetor was cleaned with non-flammable brake cleaner, focusing on the float and inlet needle to be sure they moved freely, It started in 4-5 pulls.

Carburetor adjustments

The only thing that can be adjusted is the pilot screws (idle mixture) and those are capped from the factory for a reason. If it is not runing right the pilot jets are clogged or restricted. You need to pull the set clean them and apply black RTV silicone to the bots to get rid of vacuum leaks.

Pull start jammed

Hi hwdunk, the best way to find the problem you are having is to remove the pull start from the trimmer. You will have to unhook the throttle cable from the carburetor, It can usually be unhooked without loosening the carb screws, but if you can't unhook the cable loosen the carb screws to unhook. As you remove the assembly you will have to unhook the 2 wires that come from the on and off switch, they just pull off. Use long nose pliers, it is much easier. Now you will see what the problem is. The rope is probably tangled up or has come off the rope pulley. I hope this helps you a bit. All the best and good luck.

I have honda gcv160 5.5 pressure washer, after sitting over winter, I went to use it, and I can't even pull the cord to try and start it. What are any reccomendations as to what I can do to fix this?

My power washer started doing that after the pull-cord mechanism broke.
I took off the hoses to make sure there was no back-pressure caused by the pump.
And pull rope was still frozen.
We took off the pull rope cover on top of the machine.
The cover came off easy.
After that we lifted out the spring-pulley where the rope is attached the spring unwound and we couldn't get it back together so I bought another one.
We should not have lifted it out ... we should have tried to get it to move first without lifting it up.
In any case the washer worked fine after the replacement.

When you store a power washer, be sure to drain the water and disconnect the hoses.
Don't leave any gasoline in the engine or it will gum up the carburetor.
Never turn a gasoline engine on its side or upside down or the oil will run into carburetor, and carburetor will need work.

My stihl 041 saw very old made in germany farmboss but very low hours on it. will pop and smoke a little but not start. When I pull on the starter and it almost starts it gets very hard to pull on rope -...

Answer to 2 year old question about hard starting saw. There is a seal that goes bad and leaks chain oil into the crankcase. This will make it very hard or impossible to pull the starter rope. To start the saw, pull the spark plug, stand the saw on it's end so the bar is pointed up and pull the rope 10-15 times. Replace the spark plug and start. It will smoke for a while. To stop this from happening, always store the saw with the bar pointed straight down.

McCulloch 3200 takes many pulls to start, runs good when does.

I don't think I can help, but normal starting procedure for me is to put choke on, pull on recoil until it kicks over once. shut off choke and restart. Sounds like you have fixed almost everything & adjusted mag right. Rick

Unable to start gas engine on a NorthStar pressure washer

Disassemble and clean the carb. If it ran briefly with the starer fluid then gasoline is not coming through the carb.
