Question about Apple iPhone 5

Iphone 5 won't restore! Kill me knowwwww

Okay, so I got an iPhone 5 for free a couple months ago with a totally destroyed screen. Like an @#$hole, I tried restoring it without the screen working anddddd it got about 99% in iTunes and then got the error messages. SO - I got a new screen/glass on the web so I could see what was going on and now it's stuck on the, "Plug in to iTunes" screen. I have tried everythinggggg I can think of to get this stupid thing to restore. I thought it may have been jail broken, so I got tinyumbrella - no joy. Also tried evasion, redsnow, itools, ireb, etc.,etc. There are no blobs to recover from Cydia and I've tried all the 6.* Firmware customs restores. I cannot get it into DFU for the life of me, redsnow kicks it out of recovery and it goes back everyevery time whilst plugged it. I've also modified the windows hosts file, turned off all firewall/antivirus stuff, changed my router to allow the traffic and loosen the firewall, etc. I KNOW there is a way to do this. I have a buddy that says I'm not doing it, (DFU), and the right now but I've done the whole "Up-Volume" thing and still nothing. Acts like there is nothing to boot? Any help would be awesome. I know there is a way to do this. No water damage FYI, checked for it. Help me PLEASEEEE and THANKSSSSSS

If for some reason the iPhone is keeping some bad data in RAM, this method could actually be worth a shot as disconnecting the battery will in turn clear RAM incase something won't clear on power off.

I tried this after reading your post, no luck.

  • kozkoz Apr 02, 2014

It just keeps flashing the Apple logo, "Logo...Black...Logo...Black...Logo".

DFU doesnt happens with volume button. You keep connected the phone to computer then hold the Power and home button. Once you see the screen go off and come back again then wait till it goes off again and exactly after 3 seconds leave the power button and keep holding the home button.Your phone will be in DFU mode now.But honestly speaking the kind of troubleshooting you have done it seems there seems to be problem with hardware and most probably it is baseband (radio chip)

Testimonial: "As I stated below, DFU, whether it software-forced or physically, is not opening. I get now power slider or lock screen. I've never seen the iOS actually running. Do you mind explaining more specifically what you mean why you'd would think the baseband and what kind of hardware/software correlation it has? Thanks for taking the time to respond. ------------------------------------------------ I just posted this for someone else's response. : (So onlooker's, forgive the redundancy) Hey, thank you for the post/info. I have done the procedure you are speaking about. I (sometimesss) seems like it will work, but immediately after you release the power/sleep, you hear the Window's device unplugged/replug sound and it comes back on w/the iTunes screen. I should have been more specific about the Vol.-Up dealio as well: I've tried that unplugged, to see if it would boot regardless of boot-files, w/no joy. The poster after you said it may be a corrupt/damaned baseband? I also have redsnow already, along with just about every-other free JB freeware, and it will not allow for pwned DFU because the Recovery Fix doesn't not stay. It immediately resumes iTunes after about 10 seconds. I've also tried the "Custom-ipsw's" like "Recover In DFU.ipsw" as well as just the stock. I saw an article on here that said you may need to remove the .bbfw's which I've done an tried with every version. I feel like I am missing something, there has GOT to be a way around it. I mean JC - I work in tech. support and deal w/problems 1000x more difficult but there is simply something I cannot address in this instance. I mean, in reality it's just a small HD - it should be formattable, no!? Any-hoo.. Thanks again!"

Just to clarify, you need to have your phone connected to iTunes to enter DFU mode. And rather then the Volume buttons you'll need to hold power for 3 seconds (until the Apple logo shows), then Power + Home for 10 seconds (a little after the screen goes black) and finally Home (releasing power until iTunes says a device is in recovery mode)

Then go ahead and try to restore.
If that doesn't work you can try use Redsn0w to enter PwnedDFU mode, sometimes after a device is jailbroken to restore to either a modded IPSW or even stock firmware you need to enter this special DFU mode

Otherwise technically you shouldn't need to even enter DFU, recovery should be sufficient (hold home button as you connect the iPhone to iTunes)

Oh and FYI: The Volume-Up key is usually used to disable Mobile Substrate during bootup if it's installed on a jailbroken device

Good Luck!

Aple should really loosen their restrictions on Apple products. Its true that the iPhone just have a small flash storage like an SSD but certain boot files are stored in ROM and cannot be overwritten or edited. They can, however, be damaged. Apple did this to circumvent Jailbreaking (didn't work). Now this may sound stupid but out of personal experience you may have more success on Mac. OS X has all Apple mobile drivers built in and no conflicting drivers, and since a DFU iPhone actually triggers and uses different drivers it may be worth a shot if you have access to any Mac with the latest version of iTunes.

I actually tried on a Mac about a month ago, before I got into the jailbreaking stuff just straight restoring and it seemed to get further and actually gave me an "Error Report" of the log. I will ask someone at work if I can

  • kozkoz Apr 02, 2014

Funny thing with this whole endeavor is I've bricked my router as well lol. I use a Linksys E1000 that is not longer scripting because of all the changes I've made/reverted. Apparently, after talking to Linksys Tech SUpport, the only way around it is to reset it, which sucks because I have some many things set in it. Portforwarding, IP reso, etc etc. But, even tho you can no longer log into it, it's still managing to keep the settings I've put in place. ipconfig is still the gateway I assigned and same DHCP pool. Just weird really, and somewhat irritating.

  • kozkoz Apr 02, 2014

And I have redsnow also, can't remember if i said that or not. I literally have every freeware JB there is out there, no joke.

If the methods above don't work well for you. You'd better try some software which would help you get the problem fixed. This guide may give you some hints: iPhone Stuck in Recovery Mode How to Fix

@Shirley Xiang: I've tried Dr. Fone already. Because i got the phone for free from someone who had it left in their apartment ie the previous owner is unknow, I am not able to recover anything from it. my @me.com recovers my data from previous iPod's and whatnot, but there is nothing regarding the iPhone. The recovery fix in Dr. Fone does not work, simply puts it back in recovery mode. Thanks for the help attempt tho - I'm sure it will help someone else. I've been told by someone who knows more about iOS than myself that the "baseband" is no good.. Not sure if it is or not but as the phone is still a paper-weight, it verywell could be.

I would suggest reseotring it once more and trying to use quickpwn again. If it fails you may alternatively want to use Winpwn, it basically does the same thing.

SOURCE: my iphone does not turn

If the ios 5 is in beta. That means that it's in Test mode. If it keeps messing up and dying. It's not ready yet.

Beta = Test

So the best you can do is offer feedback to Apple over it, then restore your phone back the the latest ios 4 for the time being, and wait for ios 5 to get out of Beta mode

No, it's not the end but you will most likely need to take it in to a Authorized Repair Center so they can repair the broken, cracked screen and any internal damage since obviously water or moisture getting inside is an issue.

Sometimes my Iphone will not charge when i connect it to the wall charger. I just bought my iphone a couple of months ago.

If your iPhone is not charging when you plug it into a wall charger or into you computer's usb port, this is a usb connectivity issue and the connection just needs to be reset. All that needs to be done is plug the iPhone's cable into the phone but don't plug into the computer yet. Hold the phone's select button (the round button with the square) down for about 30 seconds or until the apple appears on the screen. your phone will reload and reset the connection and the computer should recognize the device. Allow the phone to charge for at least 30 minutes before unplugging.

If you just see an apple logo or your phone does not turn on, there is a software problem and you will need to restore your iPhone. I didn't want to hear it, because now I had to redo everything; but it's the only solution.

Put your iPhone into recovery mode.

To put your iPhone in recovery mode:
Step 1: Plug in your iPhone to your computer, make sure your sound is turned on and not muted.
Step 2: Hold the top corner button for two seconds. You should hear a sound.
Step 3: Now, still holding the top power button, immediately press the home button and hold both buttons for 10 seconds. You should hear another sound from your computer.

Step 4: Release the power button but *continue holding the home button*, for another 30 seconds.
Step 5: Meanwhile, continue holding the Home button and open iTunes. Wait for it to tell you that it’s in restore mode. You should also hear a third sound from your computer during this time.

Step 6: Click on your iPhone in iTunes. It should say it's in recovery mode and need to be restored. Step 7: Click OK and restore it.

Now you will need to re-jailbreak it, and restore your backup, and also put your music back in.

Good Luck!
